What do you like in a bar playlist?

I understand this is a pretty broad question, but I'd like to hear everyone's answers. Of course it depends on the type of bar, the time of day and the day of the week.

The bars I frequent as of late all have great patios and refreshing cocktails, and in that setting I'm a sucker for a playlist full of Meters, Booker T., Stax stuff. The bar I manage is heavy volume, near stadiums and music venues. We serve lots of beers and douchey shots. I've realized that upbeat indie dance type stuff seems to create a good energy in the room. LCD, Hot Chip, Ghostland. There's a few breweries on the north side of town that plays Mastadon, Sabbath, Metallica. That really seems to work for those guys and have helped me appreciate heavier stuff more than I ever have. They've got classic arcade games too.

I could talk about this all day.

Every Sunday starting at 3:00pm I've designated as Steely Dan Sundays at the bar I run. It's wonderful.

It really depends on the bar. Most of the time I want music that's not too loud or recognizable but that I can groove to should I decide to tune in.

One thing I know for sure, it's impossible not to have an amazing experience at a bar when Living on a Prayer is played. Impossible. That song bridges all occasions and heals all bar-related wounds. You will make best friends with strangers and have the time of your life when that song comes on. I'm not sure why. It's not a great song. But there is some kind of terrible, awesome magic in it.

AZ Wilderness has a nice mix of stoner metal and modern rap with a few local artists (JEW, Gin Blossoms, Meat Puppets and Calexico) thrown in.

They tend to avoid the brewery cliches like the aforementioned Gary Clark Jr., Black Keys, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Alabama Shakes and overuse of '90s alt.

I like both those bands. Should I put that in unpopular music opinions thread?

I say avoid Journey and Bon Jovi. They have the wedding circuit, let them stay there. And there’s really nothing that makes me hate humanity more than a bunch of drunk people belting out either of those aforementioned at 2am. I only grew up to avoid that scenario.
