Or it just doesn't work with Pearl Jam as a band, i.e. their sound. Your argument is certainly plausible but I lean more toward it just not working, especially a Springsteen song in a Pearl Jam setlist.Lament wrote:I suppose one possible explanation for it all (and actually something I've always wondered) is that Springsteen is an influence that not only does no one else in the band share, but that the band straight up dislikes.
I've always found it curious that if you look at pre-sets, solo sets, solo shows, and appearances with other artists Ed has covered One Step Up, Bobby Jean, My Hometown, Growin' Up, No Surrender, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Drive All Night, My City of Ruins, and seemingly 75% of Nebraska, but as far as I know he's never been joined by even one other member of the band in doing so. It seems odd to me that a band that does as many covers as they do has never attempted a full band cover of one of his songs. Maybe the rest of the guys can't stand his music.

Neil brought an emulatable earnesty that reached beyond the need for acceptance, and he had profited well by that in the long run. Ed, looking to recapture the genuineness that had drawn him to music in the first place, would be able to appreciate that. The rest of the band would have been easy to pull along, as Neil was someone who had as of 1993 managed to maintain his career for 24 years (not counting Buffalo)(we're almost at 24 years now...wow).stip wrote:that's fair. I just don't think springsteen was ever someone you needed to hide the way you describe here. I think it's more likely that post VFC tour when they met each other he probably fronted bruce to the top of the 'people I should emulate' list. Maybe he just smells better than Neil Young. You reach a certain point in your life when stuff like that matters.
Later, having survived that tumultuous moment, I can imagine them/him looking for more positive figures...people who lived a long career without having to put out so many records, spend all their life on the road, and while maintaining a more influential position. This would especially have been true in the 2000-2006 era, when the politics of the United States ate nuts and Ed was facing his total inability to matter in that regard.
Also, getting old, being less creative, and being a great deal more family and personal life oriented than he used to be, someone like Bruce is now a far better role model for where he is than Neil Young could ever be.
That's how I see it.

Probably his voice. I only really know his 'hits' but punkdavid made me some 2 disc gh once and none of it struck me. Exuberant, but that was the best thing I could say about itcutuphalfdead wrote:Tell me why.stip wrote:I can barely listen to Neil youngVinylGuy wrote:Some of the old work from Bruce is good, but he is nowhere near Neil.

Its a very difficult artist. I recommend to get an actual album and listen to it, forget about a greatest hits compilation or something like that...stip wrote:Probably his voice. Seeing as how it's a nickname Bruce disliked from the start, and grew to loathe, I often wonder how he's felt the last 25 years or so as every semi-literate rock jack-off who ever felt the need to pay him tribute has done so using exactly that.If Bruce is the boss then I quit.
