I think I agree with every single point.daft twat wrote:I have only listened once, so here are some initial random thoughts:
1) I have underrated O’Malley’s skill as a bass player because Helders is usually grabbing all of the attention.
2) This is no more an Arctics record than Into the Wild is a PJ record.
3) There is not a single on this record.
4) This is the perfect record for teenage girls in love with Alex the poet, but are there any teenage girls left who love him? AM was 5 years ago.
5) The LSP comparisons are unfair. LSP has great hooks and catchy melodies and choruses.
6) This record would have been great 20 years ago as a cd with liner notes and lyrics.
7) I will probably listen to this for a while and then forget it.
8) The next Arctics record will be billed as “the first proper Arctic Monkeys record since 2013 unless you count the 2018 experimental Turner solo album Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino.”
9) This makes No Code sound like Thriller.
10) No. 1 Party Anthem is better than all 11 of these songs.

2nd listen revealed a bit more. Four out of five is the highlight.

This will definitely shed some fans I'm sure. I may not like the album at the moment but I certainly applaud them for carrying through with a project/vision.VinylGuy wrote:Lol about the whole No Code thing.

So I agree and disagree.Got Some wrote:Lightning bolt is 100% better than TBHC
It’s 100% better only in that it sounds like at least a shadow of the band name on the cover.
But LB is lazy. There is zero risk. I’ve only listened to this album twice, and it may never click for me, but false advertising aside, it’s ambitious and risky, 2 things people around here mainly bitch about when it comes to Pearl Jam.

Re: Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino
Why? PJ was a huge rock band when they put out No Code.VinylGuy wrote:Lol about the whole No Code thing.
AM was far and away the Arctic’s most commercially successful album. Then they put out this. If anything, it’s even riskier than what PJ did. PJ put No Code out 2 years after Vitalogy, and while they had Who You Are and let Stone sing on a song, there were still songs like Hail, Hail and Red Mosquito. This album came after a 5 year wait and has no reminders of the old band. I can’t believe the label allowed this, to be honest.
I don’t think there is a doubt that No Code is a better collection of songs (though it doesn’t feel like a cohesive album to me) if that’s what you’re referring to, but that was never the point of the comparison.

No Code was not that big a departure. Musically at least. In attitude and approach, yes.
This album is more like Kid A in departure.

giving this one a listen.
it feels like this entire album is supposed to be a showcase of vocals and supposed thought-provoking lyrics.
but i think i'd like it much better of it was instrumental. there's some nice things going on behind the wall of words.

I completely understand this. I love the opening track, and I think it’s in spite of Alex. On the other hand, I agree with LMS that 4 out of 5 is the best track, and that’s 100% because of Alex.bodysnatcher wrote:giving this one a listen.

I feel very lucky to have stumbled upon this band in the early-ish stages. They are never dull. I need to find a way to see them this summer. Detroit, maybe.

Hey VG, what’s your history with the band? All your comments in this thread have been negative, but you’re listening to the new album. Were you a fan at one time and hope they’lll surprise you or have you always disliked them and hate listened because of the accolades and you’re trying to understand? You have RM history, so I know you’re not just a troll. I’m just genuinely curious. A one time “fuck this overrated band” post would do, but you’re here. I’ll bet Bain and I can come up with albums of career spanning b-sides you’d like better than the new album.VinylGuy wrote:Im listening to it now...so far every song feels exactly the same.
