I don't think shallow is the best word for the artistic statement being made. Simple, perhaps, but not shallow.

Nah, it’s shallow AF. And totally undercooked. And unearned. And, ultimately, I’m not sure it’s even a statement at all.

I have no idea what it is to be black in America. But it seems to me Donald does and has a few thoughts on the matter. And I can't imagine why it's a problem for any artist to wrestle or engage with those questions and conflicts even in a simple, straightforward way.

That kind of segregated curve grading for black artists is so condescending and anti-art. I reject everything about that approach.

I asked my black coworker what he thought of this song and his main issue with it was how gay Donald was acting.

This kind of repeated comment isn’t constructive either. Again, segregating black artists into a category that no one who isn’t a POC is allowed to analyze is absurd, and hardly what I would call progressive.tragabigzanda wrote:Just a bunch of white dudes on a Pearl Jam message board spending four pages arguing over whether a black artist's latest work is impactful, amirite?

Would we? Black Panther is the best movie ever made according to Rotten Tomatoes.tragabigzanda wrote:Sorry, this was just my lame/snarky way of saying that if we're still arguing the integrity of the art, then Glover must be doing something right; otherwise we would have just collectively yawned and moved on.LoathedVermin72 wrote:This kind of repeated comment isn’t constructive either. As a big Glover fan, i was really tired with the song. Nothing new here. More of the same. I agree with LV´s view on how this is just another complaint from a left millonaire about ¨america¨
Its pretty narrow and safe at this point.

Okay well to be fair I didn’t say that. Rich people and leftists are allowed to have opinions and complaints just like anyone else.VinylGuy wrote:As a big Glover fan, i was really tired with the song. Nothing new here. More of the same. Dime, I'm not responding on twitter because it's more direct for you:
I had a truly terrible day yesterday. When I said that that mash-up was the first thing that made me laugh, it was true. I wasn't laughing at the idea, I was laughing at how well it synced up. Kind of like the first time watching Oz with Pink Floyd.

Pop is more creative and bold than ¨this is america¨..i would say this song compares to whatever u2 did after 9 - 11 maybe.
