yeah but the majority of his 70s work isn't (aren't?) fuzzbombs. sure, a lot of it takes its time getting to where it goes, but the instrumentation is crisp and bright and clean
oh sure, but that's where the voice is a dealbreaker to me. The instrumentation really puts him front and center, and I just don't like listening to him sing. I think on songs that have a bit more urgency I might get past it, but on languid atmospheric pieces it's going to work to the detriment of the song. I bet I'd like covers of more than a few of these.
yeah, the voice isn't something you'll likely ever be able to get over. i really dig it.
it's interesting that you dig stipe but don't respond to neil.

You're a better person than someone who harbors a blanket opposition to Twitter.
i'm really not
I'm sure you did what you thought was best.
i'd categorize it as more of a "blanket indifference" than a "blanket opposition"
If you were truly indifferent then this thread being a twitter free zone wouldn't mean a thing.
that's why i used the qualifier "more." i'm very, very weakly anti-twitter, but it's a position much closer to indifference than anything that would inspire stronger feelings or opinions.

how about this?
that was pretty good.
bup bup! The doors have opened, come play....
that was pretty good. If someone had that on I'd listen, but I didn't hear it and think 'man, I need to find out more' like I did when I listened to the first song on that mynabirds album

do you think they sound similar?
i would say they're similarly distinctive, and both are pretty polarizing. i happen to like both, but my feeling is that those who dislike either/both REM and neil young classify as their main objection vocal stylings.

I think Stipe is a bit deeper (I'm talking about the voice), more mysterious and, when he wants to, he can do that really beautiful soaring thing he does. I can see the similarities now that you mention the two of them together, even though they never really struck me before

He was a bolt of lightning for me, but I got into him when someone made me a mix tape. I'm not sure if I put on Bone Machine or Rain Dogs if it would have stuck.
