When did you get into Steely Dan?

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Just looked at last night’s set list. No big surprises. Two solo Fagen tunes and they dropped the solo Becker tune.

6 days!!

I walked past the Brill Building a couple of times yesterday and the significance of it within the history of SD was not lost on me.

I just saw where they will be doing a Beacon Run in October and they will be doing shows featuring full albums. No Katy Lied, Pretzel Logic or Can’t Buy A Thrill but they’re doing the Nightfly and Aja twice. They ARE doing Countdown to Ecstasy so that’s probably my one chance to see King of the World, but seeing as we’re driving back home from a New York trip as I type this, it’s highly unlikely I will get to go.

I know!! Still hoping for a pop-in by Mike McDonald and maybe even Larry Carlton since they both live in Nashville, but if they don’t, that’ll be ok.

We’re leaving in about 30 minutes to hook up with Papa Wease then head on down.

So, we get to the venue about 15 minutes before the show is supposed to start and it’s raining. They have workers out there with bullhorns explaining that, due to inclement weather, they are not able to open the gates at this time. Show time was 7:30. The weather finally slacked off and they opened the gates at 8:15 and we made it to our seats by 8:45. While waiting to get in, we discover that there is a noise curfew at 11:00 so at this point, I’m thinking it’s gonna be a shorter show. The Doobie Brothers started exactly at 9:00 and played an abbreviated set finishing at exactly 10:00. Steely Dan started at 10:25 and played until 11:50. They dropped tunes from the set, as well. So overall, I loved seeing the Dan ( they played Godwhacker, which hadn’t been done yet this tour), but still felt a tad disappointed that we didn’t get the full show.

We checked out the merch during the Doobies and they had some really cool shirts. Typically, I’ll go for a shirt that has all the tour dates, but they were all black. They had a grey on without the dates and when I asked to see it close up, I knew it was the one I had to have.

Can't believe I missed this post!

I'm sorry to hear the set was truncated; that's a bummer. But I guess the important thing is you got to see them!

I hope they have some merch I dig; I'm definitely gonna check it out.

Were the Doobies any good?

Yep. Totally enjoyed them. They played pretty much all the pre-McDonald hits and Takin it to the Streets. They were pretty high energy the whole set and a perfect warmup to SD. Especially knowing the history between them and SD opening for them on their last tour in the 70s. Their vocals sounded damn good for a bunch of old fuckers. They definitely took better care of their voices than Fagen all these years.

I’m seriously considering doing everything I can to go to that Countdown to Ecstasy show at the Beacon in October.
