I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. That's a great bit (RIP Louis CK), but it's actually the about almost the opposite, i.e. how Tom Sawyer is harmless but Huck is a dirty little racist.tragabigzanda wrote:there's a whole louis ck bit on thisSimple Torture wrote:Yeah, when I read it in college my professor just had us stop at that point.bada wrote:Jesus Christ! Roth fans--is there an essential Roth that's worth reading? I've done American Pastoral and Goodbye Columbus (both just kinda okay) and have started Portnoy's Complaint multiple times to no avail.

My two favorites are The Plot Against America and The Human Stain. Very different but both outstanding.Mickey wrote:Roth fans--is there an essential Roth that's worth reading? FWIW I also thought American Pastoral was just okay.

Do you have to read I Married A Communist to get The Human Stain? Isn't it technically part of a trilogy, or is it more a thematic trilogy?durdencommatyler wrote:My two favorites are The Plot Against America and The Human Stain. Re: What are you currently reading?
Jesus Christ this isn’t going very well. I’ve decided that one would have to be higher than bejeezus belt to understand any of what’s going on in this book. It seems to be just character descriptions cobbled together forming no real narrative or plot at all. I’m gonna give it a little longer, but if something doesn’t happen soon, I’m out.wease wrote:I’ll keep that in mind!doug rr wrote:lee the agent is dpupwease wrote:Gonna start Naked Lunch by William S. Re: What are you currently reading?
It was the first Roth book I ever read and I was fascinated by it. So, I feel like you do not need to read the others to appreciate it.Mickey wrote:Do you have to read I Married A Communist to get The Human Stain? Re: What are you currently reading?
Read the short story "Laurie" by Stephen King. It's only 32 pages and it's a pretty good read. Got a little worried near the end he would do his usual SK thing but he didn't kill anyone you were close to.
