I'm guessing there is some loose storyline weaving through these standalones. I can see Obi Wan and Boba Fett dealing with Crimson Dawn or whatever its called.

So given it’s being considered a failure, will a sequel be made? I like the idea of a gritty relatively low budget film that takes place almost entirely on Tatooine.

Was it ever planned to make sequels to the standalones? Aren't they supposed to...stand alone?

I don’t know. Solo certainly set the next one up.

You know the real tragedy? Ron Howard was talking about making a sequel to my favorite movie, Willow. Had Solo been a success, I think he could have gotten it made. Now, no chance. Fuck!

Yeah, I think it is. I’ve got it down to Willow, Airplane!, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Return of the Jedi.

What do you like so much about Willow? Is it a nostalgia thing? I wish I liked it. It seems like something I should like. Plus I really, really love this poster for it:

Nostalgia has a lot to do with it, I’m sure. I was talking to a friend about this the other day because he was incredulous that Willow could be anyone’s favorite movie. Here are the reasons I came up with:
1) Little people fascinate me. I suppose that’s fucked up, but I love them. I love the way they move. I love the way their heads are huge and their appendages are out of proportion. I can’t even cope when they run. If I see one in real life, it makes my day. The compulsion to photograph them with my iPhone is insane. I know they’re human, but they seem like fantasy creatures, and Willow is just the greatest collection of little people not painted or in masks. The village of Nelwyn is a dream come true.
2) James Horner’s score is fantastic. He plagiarized it many times afterwards. I remember specifically hearing bits of it in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. People will point to Titanic, but they’ll be wrong; Willow is his masterpiece.
3) The creatures (the costumes) are so great: devil dogs, trolls, and the goddam Eborsisk (the 2-headed dragon named after Ebert and Siskel because fuck them) are all genuinely scary.
4) Two great villains - Jean Marsh crushes it as the Evil Queen Bavmorda, and Kael’s Skull mask looks like the cover of a Danzig record.
5) People forget Val Kilmer used to be awesome. He plays the scoundrel hero here, much like Ford’s Han Solo, only Madmartigan is actually pretty funny.
6) The action set pieces - a wagon ride, a crazy sled ride down a mountain, the battle with the Eborsisk, and the final showdown are either fun or frightening.
7) The special effects were mad for their time. The morphing scene where Willow transforms Fin Raziel made Michael Jackson’s Black or White video and the T1000 in T2 possible.
8) I love Warwick Davis’ performance. It’s ... warm? I don’t know. He’s just so believable. Willow is the only movie I’ve ever watched the commentary of, and I’ve done so twice. It’s just Warwick, and it’s lovely. You can tell it was the highlight of his life. It makes me love it even more.
9) Small performances by little person legend Billy Barty and stand-up impressionist Kevin Pollack add to the movie without being distracting.
10) Finally, I know many people say it was Lucas ripping off the Hobbit. Probably. But I hadn’t read it yet. I didn’t play D&D. The only non sci fi fantasy I’d read was Narnia, and that was just a series of Christian parables. Willow was a new genre to me.

Who the fuck just read all of that? And yeah, that poster is great.

But think about it, though. People always say shit like, “Wouldn’t it be cool if there were faeries or centaurs?” Or “What if mermaids existed?”

Well, they don’t, but guess what - fucking dwarves do, and sometimes you’ll be watching your fifth grader’s shitty in house basketball game and one will just walk into the gym disguised in jeans and a t-shirt, and everyone just acts like magic isn’t obviously present. To me, that’s insane.
