About the box office, i dont think its that big of a deal for disney. This movie was difficult. It made a ton of money, even if the budget was very expensive with all the reshoots. Critically it wasnt the big failure everyone thought it was going to be, me included.
I think its fine.

LV would still hate it if they directed one. And probably call them sell outs.
Let’s be honest here.

It’s already made more money than winter soldier Thor and iron man 2 made at this point of their release.

Huh? There is no way that's true about Winter Soldier or Iron Man 2. Maybe Thor, though. Also, those movies are considerably cheaper than this.
It's fine to like this movie and also admit that it's a box office failure. The conversation around why that happened, and how this affects Disney's plans for Star Wars moving forward, can be interesting.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (5/25/2018)
Iron Man 2 Total: $312,433,331 Opening weekend: $128,122,480
Captain America: The Winter Soldier $259,766,572 $95,023,72
Thor $181,030,624 $65,723,338
Solo: A Star Wars Story $155,941,558 $84,420,489
This is all time for all four movies, so Dime could very well be right. Time will tell who wins in the end. Too early to judge.

A couple of the nerd pods I listen to have said this is the case and that it’s got more money than those films had at that same point.
They were more driving to the point that winter soldier in Particular is among the best of the marvel films so people are sorta losing focus by holding Star Wars to a higher / different standard.
As platy said. I like it and don’t care about the money but I do if / when it affects future films / more standalones
Obviously I want more.
I’m pretty sure they knew what they were doing putting it here and low key marketing it.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (5/25/2018)
Or look at it this way:
Solo is at 155 mil. If you assume it will make it to 200 mil....
Mrs. Doubtfire made 219 million in 1993 dollars
or Back to the Future, in 1985 made 210 million in 1985 dollars.
With 30+ years of inflation, Solo still won't top them.

It's probably tiny pieces of this and/or that that create the "why"
maybe 5% of missed tickets sales is because of hatred for TLJ
maybe 5% of missed sales is because Han Solo not played by Harrison Ford
maybe 5% of missed sales is because of bad placement at Memorial Day weekend
etc..

You really want to go into the inflation argument? Winter soldier and Thor are just a few years ago.
Way to miss the point but by all means continue.

Apparently box office analysists say it was purely down to lack of marketing. Rogue one had almost a year.
This had 5 months and only used 3 of those months.
It’s calculated and the reason is avengers is wrapping up. They own the field once it does.
They don’t want each of their properties cannabilising each other. Simple as that.
Soft entry for the Star Wars properties to come.

Why are you still talking about Winter Soldier? The argument that it was making less money at this time of its release is demonstrably falsedimejinky99 wrote:blueviper wrote:Or look at it this way:

While avengers as we know it might be coming to a close this is what's scheduled for marvel releases:dimejinky99 wrote:They own solo and avengers. Deadpool really isn’t a threat. My point would be this is a calculated soft entry into owning both summer and Christmas.
Let’s see if they continue.
The Star Wars and marvel should be able to Coexist financially and in popularity.
Avengers is winding up to a close though.
Star Wars (standalones) are just getting started. Here to take over. Wait n see.
Ant Man and the Wasp
Venom
Spider Man 2
Captain Marvel
Avengers 4
GotG 3
Plus something like 9 others on the schedule, yet to be named. So the Marvel competition is certainly not going away

I'm not comparing with inflation. I'm stating that even if you don't factor in inflation for the older movies (factoring in inflation usually gives them a higher total) they will still out gross a 2018 movie.dimejinky99 wrote:blueviper wrote:Or look at it this way:

A 1985 movie at 3 bucks a seat still beats out a 2018 movie at 10 bucks a seat
