It depends on the show for me. Most of the time I'd rather everyone be up and moving and dancing, but respectful. Most of my favorite shows have managed that.
But when I saw Jeff Mangum, I was thrilled that people were sitting. I just felt right.

EVERY concert you attend?Kevin Davis wrote:I would be delighted if everyone at every concert I attended just sat down and shut the hell up.
I'm not going to go ballistic and scream my lungs out seeing an intimate performance by a quiet singer-songwriter or a string quartet, but there's something thrilling about the audience losing its shit at a rock concert or any high-energy show. I'd be pretty bummed to go to a rock show where the audience was flat and unresponsive. Thankfully that never really happens where I live.

Hey, remember that time you mentioned people sung, played guitar and were generally merry throughout a screening of a Ramones documentary?theplatypus wrote:EVERY concert you attend?Kevin Davis wrote:I would be delighted if everyone at every concert I attended just sat down and shut the hell up.

That still sounds incredibly annoying.

I wouldn't disagree.

I can barely stand it when people clap at the end of a movie.

You know that scene in Seinfeld when Kramer is running from the hood on the subway after winning a lot of money at the OTB kiosk and the undercover cop posing as a beggar stops the robbery just in time? And then instead of a laugh track there is an applause? I cringe every time that happens.cutuphalfdead wrote:That bothers me so much more than it should.surface the north wrote:I can barely stand it when people clap at the end of a movie.

I've never once seen that happen in a movie.
How odd. Do those people clap at the end of TV shows they like too?

I doubt they do. The clapping tends to be a communal thing, and it often happens on the premiere night of "uplifting" movies like The Blind Side.

I only do it in film festivals or premieres when the director or cast are in attendance, but I've seen it happen outside of that. It's silly, but I kinda get it. It's like a base herd mentality shared-experience blast of enthusiasm, not unlike cheering while watching a sports game at a bar. It's not just because they like what they see, but because they all liked it together. Or something.

When you put it that way, I suppose it is preferable to an audience full of lonely solipsists silently but luminously tweeting throughout the feature.theplatypus wrote:I only do it in film festivals or premieres when the director or cast are in attendance, but I've seen it happen outside of that. Oh, I'll take the latter. At least they'd be (more or less) silent.surface the north wrote:When you put it that way, I suppose it is preferable to an audience full of lonely solipsists silently but luminously tweeting throughout the feature.theplatypus wrote:I only do it in film festivals or premieres when the director or cast are in attendance, but I've seen it happen outside of that.
