It depends on the show for me. Most of the time I'd rather everyone be up and moving and dancing, but respectful. Most of my favorite shows have managed that.

But when I saw Jeff Mangum, I was thrilled that people were sitting. I just felt right.

I'd be pretty bummed to go to a rock show where the audience was flat and unresponsive. Thankfully that never really happens where I live.

You know that scene in Seinfeld when Kramer is running from the hood on the subway after winning a lot of money at the OTB kiosk and the undercover cop posing as a beggar stops the robbery just in time? And then instead of a laugh track there is an applause? I cringe every time that happens.

My girlfriend knows I hate this, so she makes sure to do it every time we go to the movies.

I doubt they do. The clapping tends to be a communal thing, and it often happens on the premiere night of "uplifting" movies like The Blind Side.
