Favorite Non-Iconic/Underrated Pearl Jam Lyrics...

Post by Lament »

I searched the forum and didn't find any similar topics, so I apologize if this is old ground. When I was looking through that Pearl Jam Fan Portraits site http://www.pearljamfanportraits.com/ where people posed with sheets of paper that had their favorite Pearl Jam lyrics written on them, I noticed for the most part is was all the very obvious choices. The iconic lines like "The love he receives is the love that is saved," "I'll ride the wave where it takes me," and "I gather speed from you fucking with me," were all represented, but I didn't come across anyone who had chosen a lyric that made me think "Yeah! That's a great one people forget about!"

So, what are some of your favorite non-iconic or underrated Pearl Jam lyrics?

The few that come to mind for me are...

"All this hope and nowhere to go/This is how I used to feel, but no more," from Undone.

As someone who has always felt wrongly cast as cynic, this is one of my favorite lyrics ever. The concept of "No! I'm actually full of hope, I just have nowhere to place it" really hits home for me. The second half is something I hope one day rings true.

"You're finally here, and I'm a mess," from Corduroy.

The line before it is one of the most iconic lines in their catalog it seems (and is a great line, no doubt...it was actually my myspace URL back in the day), but this follow up line is just as brilliant if you ask me. It feels so ravaged and perfectly elevates the song even further.

"They said that timing was everything/Made him want to be everywhere/There's a lot to be said for nowhere," from MFC.

When Yield came out I was certain this would go down as one of the best set of lyrics Ed had ever written, but that didn't end up being the case. I don't think there's any lyric on Yield that completely captures the feel of the album as well as this one. It may be a tad bit heavy handed, but I've found a lot of comfort in it during multiple times in my life.

So yeah, what are some of yours?

Both of those lines from Corduroy and MFC are pretty classic i guess..one of my favorites : Im lost, im no guide, but im by your side- Leash...That youthful idea of being fucking lost but still being able to understand and try to help others its appealing to me.

in his room with memories for days, he faced
an undertow of future’s laid to waste, embraced
by the loss of one he could not replace

Oh man, that's a great one. That'd be a candidate for the most devastating line in their catalog.

I never new soap made you taller

I'm a seed wondering why its grown

Using... Using... The using takes toll...

Don't see some men as half empty - see them half full of shit

The man upstairs is used to all of this noise

I'm like an opening band for the sun

I was a fool because I thought I thought the world - turns out the world thought me.

it's like she lost her invitation to the party on earth

There's a girl on a ledge who's got nowhere to turn.
Cause all the love that she had was just wood that she burned.
Now her life is on fire it's no ones concern.
She can blame the world or prey till dawn.
But only love can break her fall.

Break her fall. Yeah, only love can break her fall. Fall.

It's like she lost her invitation to the party on earth
And she's standing outside hating everyone here.
Yeah, she's her own disease, crying to her doll.
But only love can break her fall.

Break her fall. Only love can break her fall. Yeah.

Yeah fall. The world is her fall. Break her fall.
Love, love, love can break her fall. Who?
Now only love can break her fall.
Love, love, love can break her fall. Fall.
Love, love can break her fall.
Only love can break her.

hi, kneetunes!
