Is This Nu-Metal?

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Ehhhh I dunno. I haven’t exactly listened to a ton of Godsmack but they definitely seem pretty Nu. “Down with the Sickness” is 100% a Nu Metal song.

Godsmack is a watered down version of Alice in Chains and 90’s Metallica basically.

Disturbed was nu metal but they transitioned to butt rock/radio metal pretty quickly.

System of a Down isn’t really nu metal. They were reaply prominent in that scene but like Deftones they moved on from it after the 90’s.

I nominate Chevelle.

Chevelle was post-grunge

As far as SOAD and Godsmack go, it really depends on what characteristics of nu metal they had. No rap, but plenty of 1 note chug riffs, angsty lyrics and visual aesthetic.

Side note, I’ve seen way too many of these bands live. Korn, Slipknot, Godsmack, Chevelle, System of a Down, Breaking Benjamin, Mushroomhead, I saw way too much nu metal in my teen years.

What is post-grunge? I keep picturing stuff like Staind. Is that it?

Or were Staind nu-metal???

I contend that SOAD qualifies, although they rest at the edge of the genre.

Those bands have a monopoly built on the blood money of Kurt Cobain, Layne, and now Scott and Cornell.

Staind covering Nutshell was nauseating.

To me they feel too punky and political to be nu-metal. And their songs are too busy and erratic to fit in a genre built on drop-d riffing
