It was. It was a specific sound and style that had accompanying fashion and encompassed a lot of bands.

I guess when I think of "movement" I think of "ethos," and I don't see any particular ethos to most of these bands beyond getting paid (SOAD notwithstanding). It would be like calling hair metal a movement.

Like, I consider the DIY/Michael Azerrad bands more of a movement, even though they sounded (and often looked) nothing alike.

But whatever, I'm just nitpicking.

I think there was an ethos. It was quite anti-classics like The Beatles and whatnot. They didn't revere the obligatory bands you were supposed to. That and the whole trailer trash hero thing. I hesitate to say blue collar. They were whatever is below that.

Florida is basically a trailer park. I assumed when they celebrated their home state, they were celebrating trailer parks.

Nu Metal is more specific than just rap + rock/metal. RATM doesn’t sound Nu at all. It’d be like calling Pearl Jam post-grunge because they influenced Staind.

I wouldn't call PJ post-grunge but I might call Staind grunge. What is post-grunge really? Just grunge that came out after its cultural moment?

They’re definitely not grunge. Post-grunge has a totally different sound.

What about Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie? Sure, they’re probably industrial metal mixed with alternative metal, it they really seem to toe the Nu line. Especially with how hooky a lot of their songs are.
