They were a heavy influence of the era though, to be sure.

ICP and Eminem are part of the larger 1999 Spin Magazine genre, which transcends music and also includes Stone Cold Steve Austin and Adidas tracksuits

Right. And somehow I'm the asshole for denouncing sub-genres.theplatypus wrote:ICP and Eminem are part of the larger 1999 Spin Magazine genre, which transcends music and also includes Stone Cold Steve Austin and Adidas tracksuits

I “grew out” of this music during high school (00-04), and how can I really know how much of my fascination is due to nostalgia, deeply scarred pubescent brain cells, or if this music is actually pretty fucking good, but I’m enjoying the heck out of it right now.

I get a nostalgic kick out of examining this shit too. It's a good reference point for humor for people within a certain age rangeKaius wrote:I “grew out” of this music during high school (00-04), and how can I really know how much of my fascination is due to nostalgia, deeply scarred pubescent brain cells, or if this music is actually pretty fucking good, but I’m enjoying the heck out of it right now.

Im starting to think it’s just the stuff that was coming out at the tail end of the era that turned me off. Bands/songs that are naturally more derivative and bland.

Whatever you think of the music itself (and I think that it sucks), that first KoRn album ends with Jonathan Davis screaming and sobbing for a while about his childhood experience as a sexual abuse victim while the music slowly dies out. Dark.

Re: Rage and System being too political for nu-metal. I have a hard time with the idea of lyrical content being a driver for musical genres. A genre can support a wide range of subject matter, and even ones which typically don't can survive anomalies. Just because something sticks out as unique within a category doesn't mean it can't also belong to the category.

Indeed. I was listening to this shit in like 7th grade and that’s pretty fucked up.theplatypus wrote:Whatever you think of the music itself (and I think that it sucks), that first KoRn album ends with Jonathan Davis screaming and sobbing for a while about his childhood experience as a sexual abuse victim while the music slowly dies out. I don’t think anyone is being particularly exclusionary here...Kevin Davis wrote:I have a hard time with the idea of lyrical content being a driver for musical genres.
