Watched that Hansel and Gretel - Witch Hunters last night. It was actually pretty good for what it was. My only real disappointment was that whenever Hansel introduced himself there wasn't some voiceover like in Zoolander - that would have been tits!

I have 'The Master' on deck...anyone seen it? I absolutely loved 'There Will Be Blood', so I wanted to give 'The Master' a try. What are y'alls thoughts on it?

Pretty amazing. Take it in with a nice malbec and without an impatient mind. Let it take you where it will.

I didn't have a Malbec, but I did have some Pinot Noir. I drank glass after glass during this flick and was thoroughly entertained. This was my kind of movie.

So the ending...was it all just a dream (when they show Freddie at the Beach again)? Was the movie about Scientology? Was Freddie the Master of the Master? Were they attracted to each other, in a physical way? I don't know, but I really enjoyed this movie. I don't know if I'd put it higher than 'There Will Be Blood' though...that is one of my favorites over the last decade.

My take on your questions:

Was it a dream? I guess you could spin it any way you'd prefer (was it a dream at the movie theater?), but I don't think he was dreaming on the beach. He chose a road that was independent from all influence & guidance:

"If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you? For you'd be the first person in the history of the world." - Dodd

And lying with the sand woman on the beach highlighted the repercussions of such a life. You'll be forever alone.

2.) Was it about Scientology? To a degree. PTA had mentioned that he only used L. Ron Hubbard and dianetics as a template for the movie, but that it could have been about any cult group that sprung out of post WWII America. I think it has to do with the human need for governance & order in life. But I'm sure there are many ideas.

3.) Was Freddie the Master of the Master. ? He had an influence on Dodd I would think, or else Dodd wouldn't be as taken with him. I think Dodd saw the animal nature in Freddie (he does impersonate a monkey pretty well), and was some what jealous that Freddie could live by the rules of nature alone, and not some homosapien order. Dodd adopts this animal nature during the song and dance scene with all the naked women. But the real Master of the Master might be Dodd's wife, Peggy, as you see her true power over him when she disciplines him verbally and jerks him off.

4.) Physical attraction? Only in a way that a man and his dog interact. You'll see on numerous occasions Dodd treating Freddie like a dog.

"We're going to hook the dragon around the neck...teach it to roll over and play dead."

"Stop it, Freddie. Naughty boy."

Freddie returns from jail and him and Dodd roll around on the lawn like a master and his dog.

Freddie takes off on the bike, like a runaway dog. Dodd yells, "Freddie!"

"Flight" - Should have been about 30 minutes shorter as it dragged after the crash. Not sure I am gonna want to fly any time soon.

"Mud" - I can't point to anything particularly amazing about this movie, but I enjoyed it. I think it was one of those movies that did everything really well instead of relying on one or two elements of excellence.

Just got around to watching The Maimi Connection last weekend. I figured it wouldn't live up to what I'd read about it. I was wrong. Amazing.

"Mud" - I can't point to anything particularly amazing about this movie, but I enjoyed it. I think it was one of those movies that did everything really well instead of relying on one or two elements of excellence.

Still my fav movie so far this year.

re: the jerking off scene...I kinda thought it was b/c Dodd was attracted to Freddie and she was "getting it out of his system". I think your take makes more sense though. The wife was like the extremist of the movement, and did indeed have a power over Dodd.

I'll have to revisit this movie someday.
