Guys, I LOVE Dylan and celebrate most of his career.

However, I can't get into Time out of Mind, and I KNOW that is a great one.

Oh Mercy is a top 5 Dylan album for me. Help me out. Do I just need to give it more spins?

I'm the same way, it's not for me. I'm more of a Self Portrait kind of guy.

I always consider Oh, Mercy and Time Out Of Mind a bit of a pair. They both share the same... ambience? With Lanois as producer on both, they capture a very specific sound/feel in these records.

I happen to love both, although Oh, Mercy probably has the edge for me.

Can't beat a bit of Street Legal, though :hooray: :hooray:

TooM is a night time record. It's dense and murky and is perfect for hot summer evenings or pre midnight, when all your chances are dashed. Try a shorter version of the album and see if it sticks. Not dismissing the unused tracks, just trying to get to the essence of the album. Standing In The Doorway should prob get a look in too.

For a long time I struggled with "Time Out of Mind" because I wanted it to be "Love and Theft" -- buoyant, witty, full of colorful language and wordplay and biting in the way that his best '60's stuff was. Some of the songs do drag on a little long in the absence of these things, but over time I came to view it as the other side of the "L&T" coin -- an album full of defeat and fatalism, a workout for the emotions, next to be redeemed by a life-affirming feast for the senses. If LMS's redux version doesn't work, I might encourage you to test drive some of live versions if those songs; I know some Dylanheads who dislike the record's production (Lanois made "Oh Mercy" shimmer but went murky on "TOOM").

Try out these two live comps, they have some good versions of the "Time Out of Mind" tunes:

I love, love, love the murky production of TooM. I wish Highlands went on forever.

It's been a long time since I've ranked Dylan albums but "TOOM" would probably be in my top 10. I like everything about it now, but it took some time and I'm very familiar with the things that keep people from getting into it. It rewards repeat listens.

Once I get past the first 8 or so I start to think in tiers of equal albums.
