This is the kind of song they were trying to write and didn't on Backspacer; a catchy, short up-tempo that concisiously employs some pretty tried-and-true tropes (like the way it goes into that rock shuffle on the chorus, the Byrds or R.E.M.-ish riff during the verse).
Well put.

i don't know. I think backspacer was far more successful at this kind of song there than on Binaural

pretty nice little rocker - there's a lot of interresting things going on: the 12-strings riffing, the bass work in the outro, the voice in the background, etc. having said that, while these features elevate the song, i don't think it is all that inspired in the first place. i agree with stip that it bears resemblances with GSMF (the Who tribute intro and the rythm section work mostly) and i also agree that i think the latter is the best song.

Nah, it's a perfect second song for a concert.

I don't think Breakerfall is God's gift to songwriting, but I think it's better than GSMF by quite a bit.

Opposite for me. I think if breakerfall had the umph that GSMF has I would like it a hell o alot more.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

Are we judging by the studio version, or the song itself? Because the studio version is pretty leaden, and somewhat bland - but live, man, this song owns almost every other PJ rocker out there.

It's a 5 star song for me, but the studio version is only 3 stars.

Yeah definitely there is a weight on the studio version that does bring it down.

At least they both have really cumbersome lyrical phrases in common.

This song much like greivance does lose some balls on the studio version. The guitars aren't cranked high enough or something and ed's voice is strangely far away. Awesome song though and I really love the shadow vocals if thats what we're calling them.

She might be a woman who miscalculated potentiality and solidity so a forced compromise with the stereotypically fundamental (love) appears as the only way to handle frustration. Or an ignorant and naive observer suggests simplified petty cliches as a solution for the multifactorial causes of female desperation.
I like it.
The approach, presentation, and presence of women in the PJ catalogue will always be the counterweight to my skepticism and criticism against that band.

Well, sure I would have loved to get Long Road into Breakerfall, but unfortunately I wasn't part of that decision. What I got was posted above and I'll take it and enjoy it anyhow.

And here I was thinking that you were excited about seeing the 2014 versions in January of next year. I'm confused.
