Duel is fucking amazing. Spielberg’s direction is insane. The guy is just a natural genius.

And somehow you missed the lengthy nod to Duel in the last Jedi. The whole space chase is a reference to it

I want to see this, but I have such an aversion to violence against children I don’t know if I can handle it

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. I didn't really care for the first two entries but this series has really improved. At this point I'd take Ethan Hunt over Bond or Bourne.

I haven't seen Rogue Nation. But I'll probably like it. I tend to like the odd numbered Missions Impossible a lot.bada wrote:Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. I didn't really care for the first two entries but this series has really improved. At this point I'd take Ethan Hunt over Bond or Bourne.

Re: What movies are you watching?
I've been rewatching the MI movies. The first two were seminal movie experiences for me as a kid. I must have watched them both upwards of 100 times. I think they are both still pretty solid, though not as great as I'd like them to be, especially considering the first was Brian De Palma. The pacing of II is a mess; that mid-section is deadly dull. But the early section and the end action set-piece(s) are both killer. I was struck by how many long stretches there were early on with no dialogue. And the movie is loaded with that classic Woo romanticism. I think my favorite part is when Thandie Newton is running up stairs so she can steal a necklace, and he keeps cross-cutting her high-heels clicking on the stairs with the feet of dancers clacking on a dance floor. Pretty beautiful.
I did not like III in 2006. I remember thinking that it seemed really weird and wrong that Hunt had a wife and we see so much of his domestic life. But, revisiting now, I'm kind of loving it. It really ups the stakes and makes everything so much more personal. And, of course, PSH is amazing as the villain. Haven't finished my rewatch of III yet, but it's waaaaaay better than I remembered.

I think III is my second favorite of the ones I've seen. I love it. But, truth be told, Ghost Protocol is the only one that I thought was underwhelming. Overall I think it's a solid series of films.

Ghost Protocol is up next. I didn't love it in theaters, and I don't love Brad Bird. But I'm looking forward to gazing at what I'm sure will be a beautiful 4K transfer; I've heard the Dubai sequence is stunning.
Not sure if I feel the need to revisit Rogue Nation, which I found similarly underwhelming. I feel like that one was recent enough that I don't need to go back.

Just finished Spectre. I feel like I just watched this movie except it was called Rogue Nation. A crappier version of Rogue Nation anyways.

The Money Pit and Trading Places. Comedies in the '80s really were a moral sinkhole, huh?
