As far as I can tell, that might have just been a one-off thing. YLT is traditionally a trio.

I don't know how you feel about compilations, but for a very long time, Prisoner of Love was the extent of my YLT exposure. It's a great collection of their songs, and maybe better than any given album as an introduction to the band. As far as compilations go, this one has the feel of a proper double-CD collection. The songs seem to be ordered based on flow rather than chronology, which I really appreciate.Dr. Van Nostrand wrote:pretty good, i was surprised to know how long they had been around, i need to do some downloading, you suggest the newest album or should i start with some of their back catalog?surface the north wrote:What did you think?
If none of that sways you, it's worth noting that Prisoner of Love is probably the quickest way to hear both "Autumn Sweater" and "Our Way To Fall," two of the prettiest YLT songs that I can think of.
However, if it's a true album that you're after, you're going to just have to dive in head first. Their catalog is full of records that take different approaches, while always managing to sound exactly like a Yo La Tengo album. I like the vibe on I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One the best, but ten different YLT fans will tell you ten different albums.
Let me know what you grab next. Anxious to read your thoughts, Doc.

"Painful," "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" and "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out" are all great places to start. But really "Fakebook" (1990) through "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out" (2000) are all pretty golden.surface the north wrote:I don't know how you feel about compilations, but for a very long time, Prisoner of Love was the extent of my YLT exposure. Heart Beating as One is probably the best place to start...but I'm not horribly acquainted with their catalog.

Re: Yo La Tengo | Fade
And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out is probably the least played Yo La Tengo album I own, but not because I don't enjoy it. That couldn't be further from the truth. In addition to containing two of my favorite Yo La Tengo songs, the overall atmosphere of that album permeates every corner of my personal wheelhouse. I don't play it enough because I can never find the damn disc. It's never in its case, and I'm very disorganized. I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One suffers this fate too, but I can usually find that one quicker.
Today I ended up just buying a new copy of And Then Nothing... and we'll see how this goes.

Listening to I Can The Heart Beating As One right now. I love this album so much. Stockholm Syndrome -> Autumn Sweater.
Afterwards it's going to be Fade which I haven't listened to in while but I really liked it when it came out. Let's see how it held up.
