I don't really trust him after TLJ, but will obviously give the movies a fair chance. If it was just a random Rian movie, I probably wouldn't even watch it, as I haven't seen his other movies. But I do love Star Wars, and will watch pretty much whatever Disney puts out in the Star Wars franchise.dimejinky99 wrote:Are you guys excited about Rians trilogy?

he acts that way in the cave, and he acts that way in the throne room until he pulls back. yoda doesnt want to train him because of how emotional he can get. Luke is also responsible for kylo in a way he never was for vader.BurtReynolds wrote:Exactly. There was never any indication that Luke would act that way in that situation, even for a moment. In fact, when faced with a far more dangerous situation and a villain that had already committed atrocities, he still saw the good in that villain and chose not to kill him. And on top of that, his actions were vindicated, thus instilling this belief in him even further. There is absolutely no reason Luke would decide to kill kylo except the writers suck.
This is a textbook example of what you call "acting out of character" and all the flowery voiceover in the world can't help that.
TLJ presents a new situation for luke, but the emotional background to lead him to act that way is there.

i feel like i should point out that you are critiquing rey for not changing and are also arguing for a static Luke.BurtReynolds wrote:They attempt to challenge her, but there is never any doubt that they may be right or that she might be forced into a hard choice. She is so perfect, and they are so silly, that there is never any drama here. She isn't pressed on anything. She's never tempted or forced into compromise. She's never given any difficult choices. Her antagonists are no threat.Strat wrote:it is in the movie you just dont like the way it was done.tree_ wrote:that's not in the movie. You're making this up for yourself.Strat wrote:These are valid points though i disagree with your assertion that Luke and Kylo are weak and hopeless fools. I think they have challenged her in many ways and i still view Rey as a very volatile and immature character.BurtReynolds wrote:You can have static characters that dont change and are always right as the hero. That happens a lot in movies actually. Captain America or Batman comes to mind.
One problem with Rey is that, not only does she never change and is already the most powerful being in the galaxy from the start, no one challenges her worldview either (to the extent she has one) except Kylo and Luke, who are portrayed as such weak, hopeless clowns, that you can't take them as serious threats to her. She mows through them as easily as she does everyone else.
But her allies should challenge her as well. I think the great thing about Winter Soldier is that even Cap's own allies like Black Widow or Nick Fury challenge his worldview. Same in Batman with Alfred and Fox (and man is The Joker a counterforce to be reckoned with!). In these Star War movies, her allies can't stop gushing over how amazing she is. Its so pandering. Its like the writers think she needs constant validation, or that if they constantly point out how wonderful she is, the audience will just buy it. yet I still don't know why I'm supposed to care about her. She's just Jesus.
I've noticed this in a lot of recent movies (Spider-man comes to mind).
oh, and...
- Spoiler: show
Boring.
In the originals, Luke is forced into a few of those moments of decision.
so ill go ahead and point it out (see the thing i just said)
And while Rey’s worldview isnt challenged (she has a fully developed moral center) her sense of self is. It is just an internal challenge. Cap doesnt really change either - he just reacts to challenging external conditions. he is a rock - his context is different.

just like the prequels made me like the OT less, TLJ has actually made me appreciate Luke’s OTjourney a lot more. Which is nice

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
I feel the opposite. The prequels, for all their faults, really make the OT shine. They respect the characters, and really bring forth what wonderful movies the OT were. In the sequels, the characters are all stuck. Leia is leading the resistance again, Han is travelling around with Chewie in the Falcon again (and is killed), and Luke is a bitter old recluse, that goes against a lot of what he fought for and achieved (and eventually dies). Where the prequels set the stage for what was to come, the sequels are tearing it down.stip wrote:just like the prequels made me like the OT less, TLJ has actually made me appreciate Luke’s OTjourney a lot more. what character did the prequels respect - or did they make the OT better by comparison. Like hanging out with the ugliest kid in school to feel more attractive.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
First of all, I am pretty sure that I like the prequels a lot more than you do, so that will clearly put the movies in a different light. No doubt the OT are better movies, but that is exactly the same with the OT compared to the sequels. The OT are just superb movies, that the other episodic movies can't surpass, and for the most part even equal.stip wrote:what character did the prequels respect - or did they make the OT better by comparison. Obi Wan Kenobi is the best character in the PT, masterfully played by Ewan McGregor. I do hope we get to see him reprise his role. He always keeps a cool head, he is involved in most vital scenes, he defeated Darth Maul and Griveous, and also fought Jango Fett and Count Dooku. For me Obi Wan is even more meaningful in the OT after seeing him in the PT.
There is also Palpatine, who is both wonderfully acted, and has a much larger part in the SW universe after the PT.
Anakin is worth debating. They could have done more. Clearly the droids are well represented, especially R2D2.
The PT has some great new characters like Dooku, Mace Windu, Grievous, Qui-Gon.
The worst are probably Yoda and Padme.

Until you assholes can play nicely, I'm locking this thread. If it carries over into another SW thread, I'm locking the whole forum. And I'm dead serious. Some of you think you are all knowing SW fans that treat others like shit just because they don't agree with you. You are just as bad as the people that were attacking Kelly Marie Tran about her role.

i do like obi wan, though he is helped by the poor characters around him. And Palpetine is fun as a scenery chewing villian - though not particularly believable (too obvious - thougj i may be reading prior knowledge into the performance)Im not a fan of any of those new characters though. almost all of them are more wookipedia entries than characters despite the actirs playing them (in the prequels - most are greatly improved in the cartoon)

I know this is directed at someone else, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Even though I was disappointed with TLJ there are some bright spotsdimejinky99 wrote:Name your five things you loved about this movie. This is a test.
I’ll wakt.
1. Seeing Luke's hermit life (I really like the cliff jump scene)
2. Kylo, Rey, Luke performances
3. Kylo and Rey dynamic and interaction
4. Captain Cannady (sp?)
5. Porgs
(bonus!) 6. Millennium Falcon in Crait caverns

So, Crocodile Dundee, in space?tree_ wrote:You are misrepresenting my argument. Given where and how Rey supposedly spent her entire life it would be interesting and make sense to see her struggling a little bit to adapt to new environments . That worked well in Wonder Woman. A little different but similar.
As far as Luke, some of it makes sense but a lot of his character changes are unearned. I don't care what direction they go in with the characters but it is important they get there logically.

Luke grew up on Tatooine, but then in ESB he jumps into the Dagobah bog and swims to shore. How did he learn to swim?
Oh, maybe he practiced in the bacta tank on Hoth. Nevermind.

Yeah, I don't know if Luke would actually consider killing Ben. It just doesn't seem in his character. I would assume up until that point training new Jedi was going pretty well. I would like to think that Luke wouldn't think about killing him, but maybe if he was seeing this dark side flare up, to maybe coax Ben into not becoming a Jedi, or somehow trapping him in mundane chores/tasks to keep him away from training, or even isolating him. Ben, sensing this exclusion, grows angry and decides to split. I dunno.
I really dislike the flashbacks, only because (in my opinion) SW works better being a straight forward, linear story. It makes it more epic. Flashbacks feel too TV-ish.
