Arm Aloft and KYR in the same set is brutal, but IMT, Down, Fatal are all nice counterpoints. Two consecutive late Jeremys is also a bit weird. Hopefully they are not trying to add that one to the closer sets.LetMeSleep wrote:5 tracks in and a cover. Arms Aloft is a set killer.

Those fuckersLetMeSleep wrote:Fatal is lovely.
On the other hand, that’s a brutal set on paper. The covers they chose (Arms Aloft, Know Your Rights, Imagine) are the worst. Rockin’ is also dead last in a spot that includes Baba, Fuckin Up, and Watchtower.
Just doesn’t seem to be much flow. Also, who told them Setting Forth is a treat? It is not.
What I don’t get is there is no way they aren’t aware of how well-received their Seattle 2 show was, and they’re only playing 7 shows, so why are they not at least trying to recapture that each night? This just seems lazy. Wasn’t the 2012 show there also a letdown?

Probably because it wasn't that different of a set. The exact DNA of PJ's setlists has evolved ever-so-slightly over the years as material has fallen in and out of favor, but in general the formula has been pretty static, certainly for the last 18-20 years or so. People give Jeff too much credit for being a renegade free-thinker within PJ.doone wrote:opinions seem to have changedCopperTom wrote:A different set is a good set.tragabigzanda wrote:YESBi_3 wrote:Apparently Jeff wrote tonight's setlist... get excited.
That said, there are some songs here I'd have been glad to hear -- "Pilate," "In My Tree," "Down," "Fatal" -- and plenty of others I wouldn't have hated. Too many boring covers, but that's par for the course these days.

I'd rather get "Arms Aloft" than fucking "IMAGINE"

No doubt. I actually kind of like "Arms Aloft." At least it's not a classic rock warhorse like the rest of their covers repertoire.

Re: 2018-08-13: Missoula, Montana
The major highlights (on paper) for me:
Low Light (still haven't heard this live, it's a bucket-list, white-whaler for me)
Arms Aloft (one the covers that isn't over saturated to me and that I really enjoy)
Pilate
In My Tree (sorry Ruddo)
Down
Setting Forth (another I'd like to see live but never have)
Can't Deny Me (suck it RM, I love it!)
Bee Girl
Fatal
Know Your Rights (a cover that they do really fucking well)
Indifference
So, yeah, there was a lot to love and celebrate about this set. At least on paper. I would have been thrilled to see all of those live. And if they nailed them... well shit! That would be phenomenal.
The other covers are take/leave for me at this point. I always love the energy of RitFW and it feels more like a PJ song than a cover to me anymore. So, I probably would have really be into it had I been there in person.
The flow does seem a bit strange on paper. But that all depends on the vibe of the event, the crowd energy, and how well the song were played. I hope all the RMers had an amazing time. Sorry I missed it.

I love Low Life but modern Pearl Jam does not perform it well.

Setlist is weird, though it worked better in reality than i'd imagine it looks on paper. Ed really struggled during the first couple rockers, but he found his groove and settled into it.
Song highlights for me were Fatal, Pilate, NFY, Bee Girl, and Indifference. There were also a few songs i say i never need to hear again, but then the band injects some new energy into them and i remember why i loved them in the first place: In My Tree, Porch, and Down all slayed. Also i enjoyed Can't Deny Me a bit more live than i do on record.
I got teared up twice: once when Jeff's parents came to the stage and they were crying with Jeff, and later when Ed got his tambourine passed back to a little girl who was there with her parents.
The show was magical because it was a lovely night outside, Missoula is a small, funky town that had a good vibe going all day, the community event outside the show was a great cause for the state of MT, and because it was just so much fun to hang with so many RMers in person (Snatch, strat, ruddo, doc, chloe, bammer, and GH). Seeing the band perform was just the icing on the cake for me.
But then you murdered them, right?
