All I know about Matt Cameron is that he is the drummer for Pearl Jam AND Soundgarden. That's pretty impressive, they are 2 of the most popular bands of the past 25 years. That's a solid resume. Now, popular doesn't always mean best but that's pretty good.

That being said, I always found hes drumming in PJ to be a little dull, like the sound of his snare to me is a dull sound. He seems like a different drummer for SG. I'm not a drummer at all, this is just from my naive ears but that's what I hear. Doesn't drive the fast songs if that makes sense. But I'm happy he's in the band, they could do a lot worse. His stamina is impressive. I think we can all agree on that one. This year his been touring non-stop more or less, switching from SG to PJ. That can't be easy at 50+years old. Props for that.

On a side note, what if "Where's the Sponge" is that ambiant intro in the tour video and is just a little instrumental so the title was just a place holder. Maybe Mike's wife was cleaning while he was recording it in his house and she was like, "Honey, where's the sponge?" thus the name of the song? Hey, it's possible.

I don't find myself very critical of Matt's drumming, but I did love the music Pearl Jam put out with Abruzzesseessee and Irons more than what they've put out since them. I'm sure some of that is their influence in the writing, but I doubt it's all that and it's not like I hate Pearl Jam's music now, so I don't claim Matt to be the downfall of Pearl Jam.

I know my opinion on the drummers is a minority here. And I don't want to derail this thread into another drummer discussion, but for me it's Abruzesse -> Cameron -> Irons. That is purely for the drumming. I rank Matt higher overall though because of his songwriting contributions.

Those aren't the best songs at all! They're the best covers.

I wish he'd used Waving Palms as a blueprint for FD. I would say I hope he uses it again but I don't want another Ed song on the record. That feels a little risky to say because I don't really want another Mike song either.

I'm referring to the lyrics. I don't want Ed or Mike writing lyrics all over the album. I don't consider the music 'the song', it's just the music.

I've got no idea. Basically, any of them are fine when they're writing well. Ideally I'd probably ask for an instrumental album. But then we're left with Matt being too distracting. So all in all, they've not left us with many choices.

Yes, I was being silly. An instrumental album would be no good from Pearl Jam. I was using hyperbole. My overall point is that good music can make a good song a classic, but bad lyrics can totally ruin a song with a sound musical basis.
