I’m voting for the hot chick.

When I was 13 I stupidly traded in most of my old Game Boy Color games to buy American Idiot and Marilyn Manson’s album that came out the same day. That was a horrible trade in retrospect, at least I had enough sense to hold onto Pokemon Blue and Super Mario World.

Did you know "American Idiot" borrows liberally from Dillinger Four's "Doublewhiskeycokenoice"?

And that The Offspring then recorded a song called "Rise and Fall" that sounds exactly like "American Idiot"?

the FoW song harkens back to a lot of great 80s pop, while American Idiot harkens back to 2004 corporate/think-tank edginess

Yeah, it's actually that overtly "new wave" sound that made me hesitant to include it in this group of songs. It sounds like a Cars song.

It DOES sound like a Cars song! It's a good tune.

These both suck but I’ll go with SM. That whole American Idiot album was the bane of my existence in high school

"Stacy's Mom" grates on my nerves like I can't explain. Easy vote for Green Day.

I probably don't hate the American Idiot album as much as most people here do, but Stacy's Mom is too much fun to not vote for at least once in this thing.

The singles from American Idiot are the worst songs in the album. I like "Whatsername" and "Letterbomb" quite a bit

I feel like such a sourpuss sometimes. "Stacy's Mom" feels like a textbook example of the idea that just because something was intended to be idiotic doesn't mean it's not still idiotic.

Sure. I don't mind it because I have good memories associated with a lot of this stuff. And since there's a self-awareness about itself (or at least seems like there is) it feels less cringeworthy to look back it at as opposed to a lot of the hyper self-seriousness in the nu-metal tourney. For me anyway.

If I had nothing to peg these songs to and was just listening to them randomly right now I'd probably agree with you.

I haven't thought about the lyrics because I consider the vocals to be another instrument

I consider the vocals in this music to be another instrument too, registering on the aural spectrum somewhere between "Caillou" and that sound Jim Carrey makes in Dumb and Dumber

Stip should supplement this tournament with a guided tour of all the songs in it, and retroactively do one for the nu-metal one too.

I seem to recall another FOW song that achieved moderate airplay some years before this. All I remember is that the first scene in the video showed a bunch of feet tapping on a classroom floor.
