I know the Taking Back Sunday song from the Myspace autoplay days, and I was always bothered by the ever so slight tempo change in the second half of the chorus. Make it more obvious or don't slow down at all!

The little breakdown at 2:00 in "Cute" is kinda nice until the vocals come back in, I guess. But both of these are abysmal.

I think Good Charlotte's reigning superiority in the yuck department is a bit overstated. A lot of this other whiny emo-ish stuff is equally awful.

Re: The Anthem vs. Cute Without the E
I think what makes them especially yucky to me is that they sound so manufactured. I can listen to "Cute Without the E" and point out its many flaws but I am convinced those guys are sincere and believe in what they are doing. Everything about Good Charlotte comes off as cynical, meticulously designed product. "I don't wanna be you!". Ugh. It feels like something that was drawn up by a group of Hot Topic marketing specialists.

This Taking Back Sunday album has really not aged well. Still the easy choice.

Re: The Anthem vs. Cute Without the E
This was definitely my take in 2003-4, but now it feels like an academic difference that my brain registers more than my ears do. Regardless of who the puppetmasters are, this stuff all fails to clear the same extremely low bar musically.theplatypus wrote:I think what makes them especially yucky to me is that they sound so manufactured. Re: The Anthem vs. Cute Without the E
I had downloaded an early release of Good Charlotte's first album which I eventually replaced with a better bit-rate rip, however my initial download was primarily demos in basically the album order and in listening to the new rip ages ago was a real "what the fuck" moment. I rarely listen to just single tracks as opposed to full albums/shows these days but I would probably find myself switching anything by GC off other than The Motivation Proclamation.
