And the album's context.

What am I even talking about? We have no idea what "Where's the sponge?" will sound like or even if it's real. A silly song called "Where's the sponge?" would sit perfectly fine on a largely punk album with a lot of irreverent humour. We just don't know what it is, or whether it'll fit, and there's no point pretending we do.

"Where's the Sponge?" is no weirder or more stupid than "Heyfoxymophandlemamathat'sme."

If you're going to use that logic then let's lock up this thread till LB leaks.

Well, sure. But I would be OK with that.

The whole thread is "Speculation", "Is there any point in this speculation?", "No", "Speculation", "Is there any point in this speculation?", "No"... etc. etc.

So will this album be good? Rate the album out of 10.

So far from what we know: 2 - Backspacer -esque so far

But there's room for improvement!! (this statement prevents Stip from sending me threatening IMs about being a Negatron rather than an Optimist Prime)

I call bullshit on any score lower than a 5. I'll give it a safe 6 at the moment.

We've only heard 3 tracks, 2 of which are decent so that's 2/12 , which equates to about 1.6 reccuring out of 10. Maybe. So yeah.

I'm sorry but I don't like MYM (as I've said many times before) and that is the better of the 3 tracks. As for Sleeping By Myself, I don't remember it so it can't be much.

So yeah, bullshit.

even with out hearing the rest of the album, i know the newness of it will make it at least an 8 for me to begin with, but i wont be able to objectively rank it for about 6 months or more

I don't mind the music at the start, but it is a bit too familiar and those lyrics drag it down.

Chorus is ehh,

Chorus is still kinda eh.

Third verse reminds me a bit of the first I feel like they stumble a bit at the 3 minute mark before they go into the outro--like they are getting tripped up on the song.

This is going to be a good song.
2+2=8
To me it reads like my early reaction to nearly every PJ song ever.
I don't remember myself saying mostly critical things about older Pearl Jam songs and somehow arriving at the conclusion they would be good.
I remember sitting in front of most of them saying "Meh, I like that bit, I don't like that bit, that bit's OK, I love that bit. Yeah... it'll grow on me."

And I'll be spinning it constantly for weeks even if it's not great. Even at their worst PJ are still pretty much captivating to me.

But based on what I've heard I'm not optimistic anymore. The last 5 tracks have really left me wanting.

It´s a 3 at best so far, MYM might be the best song and I don't even care for it

Yes. Ten took a while to grow on me. Versus had a few songs I didn't think were great initially. I skipped the leftfield "non-songs" on Vitalogy when I was younger and didn't really understand why they were there. A couple of No Code songs I didn't really get. I was really disappointed by some of Yield, especially GTF. I hated Binaural the first time I heard it; as far as I was concerned it was PJ getting old but still trying to rock. I felt the same about Riot Act but I preferred its stripped-down depressing feel, given their age. S/T was only half good, the rest was boring. Backspacer was consistently OK but only very good on a couple of spots. And there are a lot of PJ songs that I like bits of but not everything, including MFC and In Hiding. They're very good at creating almost-good songs, and it's always been that way.

My opinion of the first 7 albums has drastically changed over time. I love them all now.
