The idea that the hand sign is a secret symbol for white power owes its mainstream spread to a viral troll campaign aimed at making liberals and the media look gullible. In February 2017, 4chan’s /pol/ board discussed ongoing tactics to try to get the idea to go viral. “To any who haven’t seen the original thread, our goal is to convince people on twitter that the ‘ok’ hand sign has been co-opted by neo-nazis”

Two points:

1. The idea any non-trolling person would purposefully flash recognized white power symbols while on live tv, sitting in at a Supreme Court nomination they support no less, is absurd. Even Stephen Miller recognizes the value of operating in the shadows.

2. This thoroughly speculative and conspiratorial conversation wouldn’t even be happening if the Republican Party hadn’t repeatedly embraced white supremacism, nationalism, racism, and all manner of bigotry in the trump era. Very fine people, Judenfrei parties, “I hate black people out loud and also I just got hired by Clarence Thomas’s wife.” The list of reasons why this is far less absurd a conspiracy panic than, say, birtherism or pizza parlour child sex rings, feels endless. I find the whole thing embarrassing, but at least it’s a panic inspired by real world context. It’s not like anybody can say “no way a white supremacist would be accepted or involved.”

In summary: move on. The Supreme Court is about to add a justice who referred to fertilization-preventive medications as “abortion inducing,” in his most diplomatic and carefully phrased moments. Worry about that instead.
