I’ve either forgotten or never knew that story.

Mike Campbell wrote it and showed the demo to Tom Petty, but Petty didn't think it would fit on Southern Accents. So Campbell gave it to Don Henley...who did his best with it until the Ataris could come along and work their magic. Or something like that.

Thanks for the reminder. That sounds familiar but I’m not sure that I’ve heard that before. I think it worked out pretty well for everyone involved.

The original "Boys of Summer" is a devastatingly sad song -- it's like looking back on a ravaged wasteland of nostalgia and unrequited love, a feeling emphasized by the number of obsolete production techniques in the original recording and those sounds' affiliations with my early childhood. All I think when I hear that song is, "Everyone who either performed this song, or liked this song when it was new, or was written about in this song are now between 50 and 60, and I bet none of their dreams came true."

The Ataris cover is standard pop-punk cover fare, but the strength of the source material carries it well past its competition here.
