How does a movie that has been on dvd for weeks and only made about $3k last weekend suddenly make $35k this weekend in 25 theaters to cross $700 milliIon? I smell bullshit.

Oh wow. I've been sort of keeping an eye on that. I didn't think it would get to 700mil until after it gets nominated for the Best Picture Oscar and is put back into theatres for a few weeks this winter. I imagine the huge bump this weekend is due to local efforts at the two dozen theatres who had it. It bumped up from 15 theatres last week to 25 this week, so there was probably some "last chance to see Black Panther in theatres" advertising. Or "be the person who buys the 700 million dollar ticket" advertising. I can't find evidence of this, but that is my guess.
