Re: Interpol - El Pintor (8 September)
I picked this up a few weeks ago and ended up just listening to Turn on the Bright Lights again. Man, I love that album.

I saw that same tour in support of Antics. I agree -- they were awesome. I loved Secret Machines debut LP and still listen to it.ridleybradout wrote:He has been for about five years now. Re: Interpol - El Pintor (8 September)
Just tried revisiting this today to see if my feelings would change. They did not. This album is still a downbeat, forgettable bummer. I couldn't even get through it. I wonder if this should be attributed to Carlos's departure.
I had to switch over to Antics to cleanse my palate. A dose of that album's fun and bounciness is exactly what this band needs to get back on track.

I've returned to this album and like it more than I thought - definitely their most consistent effort since Antics.
The chorus of 'My Blue Supreme' has one of the most satisfying chord-changes I've ever heard
I really hope there's an Australian tour announcement soon, they haven't toured here properly since early 2011.

Definitely a few good songs to be cherry-picked, but boring overall.

New song sucks. This band is lifeless without Carlos.

What's going on with the production?

Dave Fridmann is what's going on with it - the guy who did S-K's "The Woods" (among others - Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev...).Mike wrote:What's going on with the production?
It took me quite a few listens to get into Marauder - at first it came across very 'shouty' but I'm starting to appreciate the subtleties going on now. 'Flight of Fancy' is my current fave.

They played a few songs off of the new album last night, If You Really Love Nothing, Complications, The Rover, and Number 10. I really enjoyed Complications and Number 10.

Just talking about the sound of it. I can barely remember the song itself because I was so taken by how awful it sounded

Definitely. I really don't get Fridmann's obsession with brickwalled distortion. I get what he was trying to do with tracks such as 'Modern Girl', but Interpol is probably the last band on earth this suits. I'd love to hear a crisp warm remaster of The Woods one day...theplatypus wrote:Just talking about the sound of it. It works for The Woods, IMO (although its abrasive sound is part of the reason I don't listen to that album much) -- here it just sounds like someone accidentally turned the wrong knob
