It’s so transparent and eye roll inducing. The replies to those tweets alone from anonymous accounts attacking him Personally tells the story and proves the point. Yet they’re simultaneously screaming that it’s tin foil conspiracy from him and the author of the paper.

I believe him, and have no doubt about that sort of abuse being directed at him. Like he said, it's got nothing to do with not liking the movie. There are probably millions of people out there that couldn't stand the movie, but that in no way warrants constant online abuse directed at him.

This among other elements. Many of the more vocal and socially maladjusted the liked of geeks and gamers assholes have been unwittingly recruited in an information war against their own society’s values.
I don’t t think terms like incel help matters but these guys literally are that. Angry lonely men who have simply been stuck at a zero maturity level and don’t realise they’re being used.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
Additional info to Dime's post(s).
Bottom line Droids work for the Russinas and hate America.Russian Bots Propagated “Last Jedi” Hate?
A new report claims that Rian Johnson’s much debated “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and the backlash against it was heavily fuelled by deliberate antagonistic action from Russian trolls and their bots.
Heat Vision reports that a just published academic paper by researcher Morten Bay finds that half of the online criticism aimed at the film was politically motivated. The paper is titled “Weaponizing The Haters: The Last Jedi and the strategic politicization of pop culture through social media manipulation” and finds “evidence of deliberate, organised political influence measures disguised as fan arguments.”
The paper goes on to say that the likely objective of these measures is increasing media coverage of the fandom conflict, thereby “further propagating a narrative of widespread discord and dysfunction in American society” and pushing said narrative remains a goal of both the U.S. alt-right movement and the Russian Federation.
The paper analyzes the negative online reaction which is split into three camps – politically motivated attacks, trolls, and ‘real fantagonists’ with the latter referring to genuine “Star Wars” fans disappointed in the movie. In the sample, 50.9% of tweets were either “politically motivated or not even human” and that a “number of these users appear to be Russian trolls”.
He says overall only 21.9% of tweets analyzed about the movie had been negative in the first place, and complaints about Lucasfilm’s reported politicization of the franchise by disaffected fans says more about them than Disney or Lucasfilm as “the political and ethical positions presented in the new films are consistent with older films, [so] it is more likely that the polarization of the Trump era has politicized the fans.”
However you feel about it, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” made $1.3 billion at the worldwide box-office, holds a 91% (8.1/10) on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85 on Metacritic, an on IMDb it stands at a 7.2/10 with 417,100 votes counted.

Semi classic B
A brief look today at these same twitter accounts that have been attacking Rian Johnson and TLJ discourse sees them freaking out and claiming they’re being attacked and are the victims of this study and the study is a conspiracy and the author is a shill. But mainly they’re the victims in all this. So they’re aining for level 10 Orwell but instead hitting level 10 Kavanaugh

Obviously not. It’s thousands of rational normal living breathing real people that flood Rian Johnson’s every tweet or Instagram post with abusive messages. Every single time. Totally not bots.

That’s actually exactly what happened when the study came out and all the news outlets totally misrepresented what the study actually found. Whole new onslaught from the same anonymous accounts. It died off

Yeah. The forum he and I were on previously - neogaf - imploded spectacularly a year ago (almost exactly) and he's the reason I didn't join the follow-up forum.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
A lot of it's in that article, actually. The forum was a cesspool (imagine RM with 1000% more members) and there wasn't a lot of good discussion.
He made several posts about it and people were attacking him there and on twitter. You can tell it got to him because he even stopped tweeting for awhile. People suck.
The new one was basically the same thing but with a "we're not going to be like that" message. Guess what, they were like that. I have an account there but I haven't posted since November, maybe.NeoGAF was criticized for biased moderation and banning political dissidents. Tyler "Evilore" Malka made a post admitting biased moderation by at least one former member of the moderation staff. Malka stated that the ex-moderator banned hundreds of members without justification. Malka also made the declaration that discussion should be encouraged with different points of view, saying that people on the website have been "driven out, character assassinated, labeled traitor for not sounding angry enough, or for not being entirely on board with ostracizing someone else for the same reasons."[26]
