Instances where he doesn't look like a hobo are more surprising.

You know, i don't really like save you that much but that performace is pretty good. It sounds dark and nasty in a good way, and eddie sounds really good too, up until those screechy screams at the end anyway. What an odd choice for a song to sing on a tv show where you can't swear though.

you know, come to think of it I may prefer that grievance to the studio version. But I also admit that I fully expected the studio version to improve on it

Was the general consensus that the studio version detracts from it? Because I wouldn't say so, personally. There are some nice clarifying subtleties that the studio adds.

Yeah, but Ed's vocals at the beginning of the track ruin any of those gains for me.

They were always a band of compromises, I guess.

Ed= 93-2000 same Ed
Ed=2000-2006 major shift and we know why. Alot of youthfulness is gone. Major maturity gains.
Ed= Today he different as well appears to be in a personal calm place at peace in ways
Pearl Jam reach a pinnacle in 2000 as a studio band and as a live band.(inmo)
After 2000 they did a commendable job soldiering on, and still do really. Now it is very evident that are very rich 50 year old men. They are what they once railed agaist.
So while some don't like Ed's lyrics in the last few years, half a decade really . I think they fit and are fine they are just measure where he is at. Just Breathe, Santa Cruz or the social issue lyrics and the pot induced stuff Severed Hand, Unthought Known thats where the focus is best. I hope he stays away from writing stuff like Daughter, Why Go, Deep, Sad, Betterman, Off he Goes, and sticks with the crap that we all complain about.

One 'stream' of Ed's writing that he still does well, I think, is the political / social. That's why MYM works, even if the anger comes from a place of being a parent: 'They're taking young innocents and then they throw 'em on a burning pyre.'

I agree, storytelling is not what he's good at. He's good at fragmentary, almost surreal lyrics that you have to piece together like poetry. That said, he's got a few great storytelling songs, and Ten was pretty much full of them.

I don't really like when he gets to pointed about social stuff ie WWS,Bushleager, but I like when he is commenting on social issue and being more vague ie MYM ,Do The Evolution, Brain Of J, Marker In The Sand.

One thing I have always noticed with Ed is he will really put his best foot forward on the lyric and go pedal to the metal if nobody is going to have a clear picture of what he is painting he has alot more passion at these moments.
He tells story really well if he is the main character ie Alive

50 year olds that didn't become what they railed agaist Strummer, Nick Cave, Neil Young, Bob Marley, George Harrison, Willie Nelson just to name a few. IMO. Let me be clear I think they as a band have done a great job being true to there fans and themselves.

Aging gracefully was always an option for these guys. Its why guys like Neil Young felt a bond with them in the first place. Unfortunately, that didn't pan out...

Bob Marley died at like 30-something. But yeah i guess, i don't know, i don't keep track on what they've rallied on in the past compared to now or whatever. It is what it is, unless they do something completely awful i try not to care that much. I only hear about them being corporate douchebag money grubbers here anyway.

How have they both 'become what they rallied against' AND 'been true to themselves'. Unless you mean it's just Eddie who has become a raving corporate whore?
