Yup. So basically, which are the quotes in which Stone and Jeff sound happy about the album, and when were they said?

Jeff seemed initially excited a few years ago. Then, the more recently the "I haven't listened to that original session in a year" comment was a bit telling about his waning excitement. He clearly seemed like the one who wanted to keep the momentum going from the first session. "I'll just go make new music with RNDM."

But, who knows, maybe that original session was too much of that logical extension nonsense and the long breather they took moved them away from that sound. Thus, BoB's seeming ambivalence.

All mindless speculation, of course.

Mike McCready, Sept 2011: It’s in such an infantile stage that it’s hard to say. Right now it’s a logical extension of Backspacer. There may be a few more dark songs, and a few longer songs. It might not be as poppy.

Mike McCready, Feb 2013: I would say as a cliché answer it's kind of a logical extension of what Backspacer was, but I think there's a little bit more experimental stuff going on. There's a Pink Floyd vibe to some of it, there's a punk rock edge to other stuff.

Mike McCready, April 2013: There’s some interesting, different stuff than we’ve done. Some harder stuff, and some more trippy Pink Floyd-y stuff, to punk rock, to melodies, all sorts of stuff that we haven’t really… we’ve touched on before but maybe a little bit more realized now.

Yes these quotes are from Mike, but he's been consistent since 2011 about more realized experimentation, darker themes, and an edge. I hope the "not as a poppy" is true. And he gives categories:
-melodies = Future Days
-punk rock edge = MYM
-trippy, Pink Floyd-y = soundcheck song?. definitely not Lightning Bolt.

If you were to take Backspacer tracks and have them "realized" as "logical extensions" on LB, which categories would you use:
Punk Edge: Got Some/Supersonic/Ole --> MYM
Melodiest: UK, Just Breathe --> FD
Straight Rock: Amongst the Waves --> Lightning Bolt
Pink Floyd-y: SoS, FoN --> soundcheck song (Sirens?)

If there is good takeaways its that the melody and punk edge songs we've already got. Nothing in the Floyd category...yet

Maybe The End is a better comparison with FD, except for the suspicions that Brendan O'Brien has put piano all over FD. Another thought, though, is that it's possible any weird instrumental choices made on FD will make a bit more sense on an album with more Pink Floyd-style material. I mean, a lot of the time I like Pink Floyd songs but wonder what they were doing with their instrumentation and arrangement. It's a bit weird for me. But if PJ are going to push that further in the next album, at least FD won't stick out like a sore thumb, like SOS did. Other songs were so conventional it seemed too weird.

Not sure if it was him, but real piano can work. When it sounds like the Casio keyboard I played with as a kid I just can't take it. What other songs have the real piano on them? (not Boom's organ)

I just remember that O'Brien played that one, I think, and it was a really well played grand piano sound. The other one that's memorable was Boom's piano on Inside Job, which was one of the best things about that song imo. With better lyrics it could've turned into a Pink Floyd-esque song.
