Is anyone surprised the most recently released console, with the highest price, looks the best?

No.. but I don't get why the XBox One Regular doesn't run it as well as PS4 and why the rendering on PS4 Pro makes it look worse than on PS4 Regular. Weird.

uh huh... probably not like in the game though. they're modern cowboys. they probably aren't racist, enjoy post-modern art and treat their women well.

Um, the Pro definitely looks better than the base PS4. A "softer" image at a much higher resolution and with better HDR. The Xbox One is underpowered compared to the base PS4. Always has been.

Someone said in a review I watched the other day that it doesn't look right on the PS4 Pro.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my life, it’s that YouTube reviewers have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to video quality

I mean it clearly looks better on the PS4 Pro. It's objective.

I trust Digital Foundry for these types of things, they really know their stuff.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digi ... 2-face-off

"With that said, while there are key differences between the four different console versions, the level of commonality in terms of the visual feature set is worth emphasising. Long-time Digital Foundry readers may remember that the original Red Dead Redemption saw a reduction in environment detail - specifically with foliage - on PlayStation 3, with Xbox 360 delivering richer landscapes. There are no such differences that we could spot with the sequel. Environments are equally as lush on all platforms, rendering effects are almost a complete match, while draw distances and pop-in are just as solid regardless of the machine you play it on.

However, the implementation of certain effects - shadow quality and the intensity of depth of field - is tied to rendering resolution, an aspect of the presentation that varies substantially between each version of the game. At the top of the stack sits Xbox One X, rendering natively on ultra HD displays and looking magnificent. Taking the runner-up position here is PlayStation 4 Pro, which uses a reconstruction technique - likely checkerboarding - to take a native 1920x2160 framebuffer up to 4K."

Trag, you gotta know your enemy. Blocking and ignoring a foe's activity is foolhardy.

Definitely looks best on an Xbox One X, but I'm too cheap to upgrade when I know a new console is coming here soon.

I said the same thing until that insane GameStop deal over the weekend. Also I’ve heard talk that the next consoles won’t have disc drives and I don’t know that I’ll upgrade if that’s the case.

I really, really hope the new consoles have disc drives and I am totally against a subscription/streaming only model for a console. Call me old school, but I want to own my games.

While I don't think the next consoles will skip on having disc drives; I also don't think it would be that big of a negative. PC games are pretty much strictly digital and it isn't an issue. Not having disc drives also frees up a ton of room for larger graphics cards and RAM and so forth. It's one reason a lot of new laptops don't have disc drives.

It's not an issue, because PC games work on PCs in perpetuity (for the most part). Console games are usually locked to a certain system and lose support/server support years later. My concern is companies no longer offering games digitally due to these and potential licensing issues down the line. Not to mention the inability to share or sell games.

Yeah I get that guy. I understand the difference. All games lose server support eventually but that wouldn't impact the digital version of a single player game. Licensing issues are muddy as hell. That's a constant battle no matter what.

Sharing and selling games would be the biggest negative. I'm just looking at it from a why would consoles move to a non disc format. I'm not for it either. I do understand why companies would think of doing it though.
