Mark Knopfler in Dire Straits was unique, held a high standard and was somewhat groovy. I just don't get his solo work.

I think I have finally arrived at the fact that, save for a handful of tracks, I don't really like Spiritualizedbodysnatcher wrote:There are a lot of parts in "Concerto De Aranjuez" that remind me of Spiritualized's "Broken Heart". I think a lot of the vocal melodies in "Broken Heart" mimic some of the guitar in "Concerto".

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
I don't think I've heard (or at least paid attention to) it before. But I heard it just now. It's a different kind of music from Dire Straits, and very in line with his solo work. It's pleasant and very mellow. It depends on what you are after. No doubt Mark Knopler is an amazing guitarist and a highly talented musician. But I find his best Dire Straits work several notches above.Higgs wrote:I get this line of thought. Knopfler is one of my all-time favorite musicians, and while I like Dire Straits, I find his solo work to be smarter, funnier, more emotional, and more musical in every way. He can fall into holding patterns and I certainly wouldn't seek him out for "groove," but he's a great songwriter and a tasteful guitarist with an ear for nuance. Favorite albums are "The Ragpicker's Dream" and "Kill to Get Crimson."Higgs wrote:I get this line of thought. With groove I’m thinking of a song like Sultans Of Swing. With excellence I’m thinking of Brothers In Arms. You have Romeo And Juliet, Money For Nothing, Tunnel Of Love, so many great songs.Kevin Davis wrote:Knopfler is one of my all-time favorite musicians, and while I like Dire Straits, I find his solo work to be smarter, funnier, more emotional, and more musical in every way. Not a single solo song can hold a candle to any of those.

Oh man, there are dozens of songs from his solo career that I prefer to all of those. Sharper songwriting, better command of phrasing, more tasteful/less flashy guitar playing -- just more sophisticated stuff all around.
Favorite Dire Straits tunes:
Wild West End
Once Upon a Time in the West
Romeo and Juliet
Telegraph Road
How Long

You know what sounds like it could be a Talking Heads song? Beauty and the Beast by David Bowie
But, like, a Talking Heads song from when they had the big band, like five years after this song came out.

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
Thank you for sharing. I've heard through all the Dire Straits albums while working today. Still tough to beat most of the songs on this album:

Don't feel that way about Pearl Jam/Reviewmirror at all, but Dire Straits has a really well made Greatest Hits album.

Man, Lorde is so talented. Saw her last night for the second time and she puts a hell of a show. She sings, dances like crazy, every song is a anthem...she has such a clear idea of the show is incredible.
And she is 22.
And she is 22.
BONE FUCKIN´ TOMAHAWK.
