speaking as a child of the 90s... it was Vitalogy for sure. even though most people liked corduroy and betterman there was a sizeable contingent that were dumb and turned off by shit like bugs. that's when the leakage started. no code obviously accelerated it.

I've always liked Backspacer. Lightning Bolt however - I struggle to find a reason to put this on.
Maybe I'll remedy that now and give it a spin

I think you're looking at their 90s output with rose-tinted glasses.
Kids absolutely adore Backspacer and Lightning Bolt. When the latter came out, every kid at my school had a copy of the CD with LB t-shirts everywhere. My kid would come home and sing nothing but LB songs every day. When I played him Vitalogy and Vs, he laughed and said it was faggy old mans music.
Fact is - the hundreds of teenagers that attend PJ songs these days don't go for the old stuff, they're going for the new stuff. Sadly The Ten-Riot Act era is now the realms of old men.

This sounds incredibly weird. Like a different world. However, the band must not have noticed, as they hardly play Lightning Bolt songs these day.lecherouslittlestump wrote:I think you're looking at their 90s output with rose-tinted glasses.

To be fair, I have noticed none of the above either.

Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
I do think people’s opinion changes over time with them. Often the more casual fan base is just not ready for their evolution as a band until a time later. I think fans rejected Vs. at that time because it wasn’t Ten. Then with Vitalogy it was the “filler”, and with No Code I think Who You Are was unsettling for the casual fan and the band really meandered around trying a host of different sounds.VinylGuy wrote:yeah Vitalogy too. But Vs? i think everyone kinda agrees on those 3.
However, as the years progress I am often surprised how many people now claim to love these albums. I think a lot of fans just needed some time with these new songs, which are now all over 20 years old- scary to think.

I was talking to a kid about 12 years younger than me a few months back. He's really into music. Works in the industry. And we talked about PJ. His entry point was S/T and he thinks that one of their absolute best records. He fucking adores it and the ones that have come since.

When I told him my two favorites were Vitalogy and Riot Act. He gave me Riot Act but he kind of winced at Vitalogy. It was hilarious.

My 14 song BS/LB mix is better than both the albums. It's actually quite good.

Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
after the first listen, i have never listened to this album from front to back straight through. once i get to sirens, i turn to something new. frankly, now that i think about it, outside of a concert, i don't think i've listened to anything from this album in over 5 years.
this album is just a disappointment. it's just pure, hackneyed drivel. when it was released was the first time i realized that we're never getting an honest studio effort from this band again.
