I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. This is bottom tier Coens for me but if it's on I have to watch it. I've probably seen it more times than any of my favorite Coens.

Yet it's still bottom tier? That doesn't make any sense to me.

Bottom tier Coens is still pretty dang good. The music, setting and time period are all up my alley. I guess that's what makes it so compulsively re-watchable. For me it's a "the whole is less than the sum of its parts" thing.

My problem with it is mostly that I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to take away from it. It just seems kinda downbeat and cynical and aimless in a way that's not particularly interesting. Maybe I'll get something more from it someday.

That makes sense given your tastes. I totally get that. He gets way more likable on re-watch for me. I kinda love the guy now that I've seen it several times.

my favorite part is everything involving oscar isaac
