Bottom tier Coens is still pretty dang good. The music, setting and time period are all up my alley. I guess that's what makes it so compulsively re-watchable. For me it's a "the whole is less than the sum of its parts" thing.

My problem with it is mostly that I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to take away from it. It just seems kinda downbeat and cynical and aimless in a way that's not particularly interesting. Maybe I'll get something more from it someday.

That makes sense given your tastes. I totally get that. He gets way more likable on re-watch for me. I kinda love the guy now that I've seen it several times.

The main character was the cat. Watch the movie again with the cat Central and it makes sense.
