The Rules of the Game has never done anything for me. In general, though, I have a hard time with the whole “comedy of manners” thing. There are some rare exceptions, but yeah.

If you hate Wilder then, yeah, I'd avoid it.

I’ve also never seen a single Woody Allen movie.

To be totally clear, Raging Bull is also overrated. But still see it because it has a lot to offer.

Other than Ben-Hur, I find none of those movies exciting at all. Woody Allen has made many great films, though.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

agree with all this except i'd skip Ben Hur
It's no El Cid, but Ben Hur is a fantastic film. I'd highly recommend it. Those old epics are vastly underrated cinematic experiences.

I totally get why you wouldn't dig Casablanca. But Psycho and Taxi Driver? Those seem like movies you'd really dig.

I love Anthony Mann to pieces but I really don’t think El Cid is better than Ben-Hur

I would say Psycho is straight-up bad. I’ve said as much before, but I really only like a handful of Hitchcock movies, and none of them are his “serious” fare.

TD is due for a rewatch.

It’s well down by Mann list, honestly. I like The Fall of the Roman Empire a lot more.

Casablanca might be the best movie ever made.

Same. I want to, I just don't have the time to watch movies that no one else here would want to watch.
