Sports games

Post by Anders »

I love a good sports game. My current favorite is FIFA 19, but I’ve also got some US ones (NBA, NFL, NHL). Do you guys play any?

I played High Heat Baseball 2002 for more than 10 years and had one franchise the entire time (Milwaukee) and probably played 10 seasons, so more than 1600 games. It's still so familiar to me that I remember the names of the made-up players that I drafted and developed over the course of the franchise; when I finally upgraded to a PS3 and The Show, I named my players in Road to the Show after those guys to keep things going. Also, when I created a player named after me, he was drafted by Milwaukee. Weird stuff.

I never got as deep into the newer console games as I did that one, but did enjoy The Show and NHL on PS3.

The Show was fun, and before I played it I was most excited about RTTS. I had a great time initially, but when you max out your player, it starts to get a bit tedious. I thought it did a great job in those early MLB years when your skills aren't maxed out and you can go through slumps and are still trying to find a groove. Load times made the mode rough, too. I really, really tried to get a franchise going, but I don't think I even finished one season. Also in a different part of my life where I can't just play 4 games in an afternoon.

I own a somewhat recent version of every major sports game (The Show, Madden, FIFA, 2k). 2k is my favorite. The amount of customization and modes keeps me coming back. It helps the main gameplay is rock solid. The microtransactions suck however. Madden has seemed "off" to me this entire console generation. It can't decide if it wants to be a sim or an arcade game and the line play is still bad.

I also regularly play Rocket League and used to play Tiger Woods all the time.

I always found those games to be really fun for about an hour and then they provided diminishing returns.

I played a lot of MLB Slugfest my junior year of high school while taking bong rips in my friends bedroom.

I still play NHL online with my friends every year but it’s the same damn game. They take away a mode or two and then three years later bring it back as “new”.
