I do, and someone else said the same thing. Smashing Pumpkins, I think? No one really knows wtf they want to do and then they change it anyway or don't do it at all.

Blaine Ryan wrote:I personally tend to have a soft spot for albums that a lot of people would consider overlong (the White Album, Wowee Zowee, a lot of Tom Waits albums, etc.). I like hearing artists explore different avenues of their sound and try different things. I like weird, off-kilter experiments. I think these albums have a lot of soul in them, and it kind of makes me sad that they might eventually become obsolete.

That said, there's a lot to be said for being concise, too. I can appreciate both sides. It's all about the content for me, I guess.

I never paid attention to album length unless it's a double album with lots of filler (as all double albums are)

I don't really have a preference on running time/album lengths. I just want a great record. New Adventures in Hi-Fi is long but I don't think there's a down or "filler" moment on the record. It's a super pretentious thing to say, I suppose, but the ideal album length is exactly however long the record needs to me.

Now, some records go on longer than they need to. It's rarer, though, to find albums that should be longer. But it happens.

I have never once heard an album I thought should be longer.

I love that album, but Leave definitely goes on too long and its placement smack dab in the heart of the album tires me out for the rest of the record sometimes. First and only song that really made me understand Stip's long-running "this track should be shorter" complaint.

The only R.E.M. album that I've ever felt was overlong is Up. Trim a few of the lesser tracks off of it and I'd put it right up there with the Murmur - New Adventures stretch.

I can understand this opinion but I do not agree with it. Leave is perfect.
