Oh geez, there's tons. Smashing Pumpkins are a band I don't particularly care for, but Billy's guitar tones on Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie... are out of this world. Blur. Sonic Youth. Dinosaur Jr. Swervedriver. Slowdive. There's more great sounds on Soundgarden, Nirvana and TAD albums than anything by Pearl Jam. Tony Iommi on the first few Sabbath albums. Robert Fripp, both with Eno and King Crimson.

These guys have (for the most part) been pretty vanilla and conservative in regards to guitar tone. I think Yield is probably the only album where I feel as though they'd given the guitar tones on each song some serious thought.

That's clearly some sort of oversight. And reading through this thread (or maybe another one) has really, really made me miss Riot Act. I've been sorely underrating it based on reading about and actually thinking about the songs and the wonderful sound of that record.

Still below No Code, Vitalogy, Binaural, & Yield however.

Nirvana's guitar tones? meh. The guitar tones on those two SP albums are good, but the melodies are what make them special, not the tones themselves.

Of course, Soundgarden, Sabbath, Dino Jr, Sonic Youth (though I don't find their tones all that special except when they're doing the more "melodic" stuff. Their aggressive tones are just grating.) do well.

Then again, I think the guitar tone on AiC's "Again" is pretty damn good and effective.

As for the last part, giving thought to each song, I'm not sure how relevant that is. They could've picked the tone at random for all I care. The point is that it's really good. Raw, aggressive, a little spare.
