Depends what you mean by “standouts”. None of those songs are better than the best songs on any of the previous albums.Monkey_Driven wrote:So, like half the album?PHATJ wrote:Those three plus Army Reserve and Come Back.Monkey_Driven wrote:Marker, Unemployable, and Parachutes are the standouts to me these days.
Army Reserve is good too. Come Back is hit or miss for me.

I agree. It’s only weakness, if you see it as such, is the obvious reach back to Porch, and even then there’s something awesome about that too. It also helps that it at least feels like the band just rocking out and it has that great jam to end it.VinylGuy wrote:I think my favorite is Severed Hand. It has everything i love about the band.

I love the lyrics. I love the sound of the guitars. I love Ed's delivery. I love the shift between the versus and the chorus. I love the melody of the chorus and the way it fights to float. The overall album production is the only thing I don't love about the song, really. To me, it's top tier Pearl Jam. I'd stack it up next to their heaviest hitters.VinylGuy wrote:what do you like so much about the song?
But I suppose if you made me boil it down to just one single element, it's the lyrics. That song really speaks to me and encapsulates how I feel about the themes the song is exploring and it says what it needs to say in a way that doesn't feel preachy to me, nor does it feel weightless. It strikes the right tone and at the time made me really think about how I interact with those issues/themes/ideas.

Yeah, the lyrics are great. Im not sold on the chorus...the music is so good and he delivers such a weird chorus.durdencommatyler wrote:I love the lyrics. I love the sound of the guitars. It doesn’t climb for me but it continues to widen the gap between good PJ and everything that follows.Leatherhead wrote:This album has been climbing and climbing for me since about 2010/11.
