Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
I think the minute they realised they had this rarity collecting dead head following thing going on, ed started over thinking the whole setlist thing and shot them in the foot. We get all those interviews with the band saying 'oh ed spends ages on the setlists, he remembers past setlists too and compares them etc' , there never used to be.harmless wrote:It's weird that he ever said this, considering the earlier ones fit a good setlist fine, the latter ones not so much.EJ wrote:"We want to write songs that we can easily incorporate into our setlists."dimejinky99 wrote:My friend and I were talking last night. He's seen about 50 Pj shows or so from 95 onwards and he was saying how he hates that the gigs have become a celebration vibe.
I would agree that the mood/vibe that used to be there in Pj shows is gone somehow, there used to be all this energy and atmosphere created and based on set lists but now it's gone.
We were wondering how the writing in the new songs will reflect that. Are they gonna be writing from the content/peaceful place they seem to be at?
Will they still try to have something to rail against and how successful will this be if they're all blissed out?
All these questions. October is so far away

That quote is weird though, it implies they write songs but toss them if they can't figure out where in the set it could go.
None of this would matter however, if the next album is good enough that hearing the songs is exciting, rather than just taking the space of whatever your favourite 10+ year old outtake.

The concept of writing to 'the set' is even more strange when they're so eclectic already, and they're different every night of a tour. Which 'set' is he writing to, and what songs does it involve? Nothing from Binaural or Riot Act, evidently.stupidmop wrote:I think the minute they realised they had this rarity collecting dead head following thing going on, ed started over thinking the whole setlist thing and shot them in the foot. I enjoyed Into The Wild (the film even more so), but enough is enough. Songs of this category should have a very limited presence in Pearl Jam's studio work. If at all.bodysnatcher wrote:mid-tempo anthems and acoustic ditties!

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
I just think any normal person is going to get sick of seeing a band so many times, plus setlists have become the same in a way. The band now ignores riot act, no code and binaural mostly and includes alot of there hits every night. Alive in the 2nd encore, close the first set or encore Porch or RVM, throw the one rarity in.
I feel it's a combination of few things for me. My next show in Hartford will be my 30th, I'm 34 now, only doing 1 show, 10 years ago at 24, I did 10 shows, I had the money, the shows were cheaper and the shows were intense. That is the one I feel in my mind that is lacking now. There have been very few intense shows since 2006. We are never gonna get another uniondale 03 or MSG 03, Hartford 98 or Reading 06 in my mind.
Plus, there many elitist pearl jam fans who are just real assholes. I would rather not deal with them at the shows. That being said, I am really looking forward to Hartford 2013 as it will be my only show I will see of them over the next 2-3 years.

I really hope eds got some dark/weird left in him. We've had an acoustic album, and a ukulele album, now I want an album full of deadmen, bugs and other weirdness. Im gonna keep hoping he has a secret album written circa '95. Hell I'd take a secret album circa '95 from the band too.bodysnatcher wrote:mid-tempo anthems and acoustic ditties!

How about that Easy Street show in 2005? They weren't playing in front of their fans. Pretty intense little show there. Something that I don't think they'll ever do again.lowlight79 wrote:

Yeah I swing between 'meh I don't care anymore' to 'this is going to be awful' - I need more than MattCam on a song I've already heard and stopped playing regularly to get me excited about this.harmless wrote:This is the worst wait for a PJ album ever.
The feeling in the pit of my stomach says that I am going to like this less than Backspacer. At this stage I would be only vaguely surprised if One Direction feature on the next single.

While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

It's actually been most of the best of what's in this thread. And, when the actual tracklist IS revealed, you're going to be really sad it isn't one of his.stonefury wrote:You just don't understand his hilarious brand of humor.dimejinky99 wrote:That guy again?

I suddenly re-realized today that Pearl Jam is about to release an album called Lightning Bolt.Yeah I swing between 'meh I don't care anymore' to 'this is going to be awful'
