Do any of you run with and or have strong opinions about knee braces or compression sleeves for your knee? My right knee gets tweaked easily. It's never major but I can tell it acts up the faster I go. It's mostly on the inside and of the knee near where the leg muscles connect.

I wore a sleeve the last time I had a bad IT band issue. I have no idea if it helped or not but I would lean towards it just having gone away on its own.

It really depends on what's causing the knee pain, but in general, I'd avoid braces and "compression" anything.

With runners, it almost never about stability or stressing the ligaments and about the cartilage and patellar tendon.

Icing after a run will help, as will stretching before and after.

If your a heel-strikers, focus on landing on your midfoot.

This is something I've been focusing on big time for the last year or so.

My wear patters are on the forefoot. Probably why my hip is screwed up.

I was doing this for awhile and now my midfoot feels like something is unhappy. I need to go see a doc about it soonish and see what's going on. My pinky toe and the one beside it are starting to look like the toes on one of those Chinese foot-binding women's feet, curling under and sideways; I've been getting some weird callouses there...like one of them is on the tip of my toe, as if it were being rubbed on the front of my shoe to the point of needing extra protection there. Strange stuff.

Honestly, I'm no expert.

I only know that changing my biomechanics made a huge difference for me.

Leaning forward, looking to the horizon and landing on my mid- to forefoot made a big difference. I've been faster, able to handle more miles and "relatively" injury-free since changing my form (my hammy pulls this summer were probably my biggest in the last 10 years of running).

I'll always recommend changing form over something stupid like "motion control" shoes.

This is purely anecdotal so take it with a huge grain of salt, but fwiw a couple years ago when I first started running I had intermittent knee pain (self-diagnosed as runner's knee) and plantar fasciitis. The pf got so bad I almost had to DNF a 10k race. Halfway through the race I switched from heel striking to midfoot striking and was able to finish without pain. I've been midfoot striking ever since and haven't had any knee pain or pf flare ups since.

Is there a disadvantage to running on minimalist shoes over city streets? I see some TSLAs on Amazon that look good for less than $30.

Anyone know of specific style or brand of running shoes that lend themselves better to the mid-foot strike form?

I'd go with a zero-drop shoe like Altra.

You want something with minimal heel-to-toe drop. Something 4MM or under.

I went for a short run today just to see how much it would suck and I hated it so much that I think I'll go back for more tomorrow.

Bah.
