It’s difficult watching modern westerns without thinking of equal rights and modern values. Seldom is it about getting by, it must also be about the development of human kind. At first this seemed to be just a straight shoot, but as the movie has progressed, it has become more and more infused with modern day values. Often breaking with how characters acted earlier in the movie, without much explanation. The funny thing is that as progressive as it tries to be, it is still inadvertently racist, and all seen from the perspective of the white man. A throwback in those terms, but then intensely 21st century introspective on the other hand.
Again, I really think the final shot sells it all. It really redefines the whole movie IMO

Hostiles: Yes, the last scene was very good. The movie had several powerful moments, and some fine acting. I think it got lost in itself somewhere along the line, but it’s still well worth seeing.

Didn't care for it at all. More White Man's Burden bullshit we've seen a thousand times.

I can understand that. It bothered me that the movie turned the way that it did. At first it’s just a really cool and well made western, and then it becomes entrenched in its 21st century sensitivities, while at the same time picturing Native Americans as either savage or wise men of the land. The Native American women were just caricatures. So it’s both about the white man’s burden, while itself is black and white in its portrayal.

If you look past that, there is an interesting story, a fine production, great acting, and several powerful scenes and images.
