I have a hard time theorizing on what they’re interpretation might be, but the RNC’s own polling is really clear: the more they talked about a wall, the more they lost their Kavanaugh momentum...and in the places where both the local candidate and Trump talked the wall the most, they lost the most ground in the months before Election Day. The base gets worked up, but at the sacrifice of a LOT of independents. Honestly, it’s feeling increasingly possible to me that losing disasterously in 2020 is a part of their survival plan. Become the outsider party again, blaming everything that’s wrong on Democrats, and simply dumping their base once they shrink enough (mostly through end of life) to be disposable. The one essential piece to that would be to avoid being exposed for having collaborated with the NRA to launder money into campaigns, which essentially makes Trump’s principle goal their own.
