I don't subscribe to the backlash coming from the NIN community over Everything......but that doesn't mean I like the song. If I want to listen to The Cure I can do that.....Trent's take is pretty bland.

Well, its a matter of taste of course...i think its a good song. Its a different take on what he used to do, and even if its not entirely outside his comfort zone; it gives away that this record seems to be interesting.

It's not bland, it's just upbeat. It sounds like pop, but it sounds like pop done properly imo. There's a bit of One Direction in there, but so what? It sounds like Trent is having fun and that's what this kind of song needs. NIN was already using electronica in the music; if they wanted to do something fun and happy, this is exactly what I imagined it would be.

It sounds like music from a Sega video game from the 90's I can't quite place

Its a weird song for him, specially the first part but i cant say i dont like it.
I'm listening to it now. The Fixer wishes it was this good. There's a definite The Cure vibe I'm getting.
im getting more of a post punk vibe, specially in the drums. Its really weird to hear Trent sing that way in the intro.
Is this Trent's Nashville Skyline?

The Slip is interesting. With Teeth is just bland at too many points.

Anyway, moving on.

Dancing to One Direction and the like at gay clubs is one of my favourite things to do. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Its okay to like The Cure, One Direction and being gay......but why bring back NIN if you are going to release a song like "everything" under that moniker?

Well, The Cure (being gothic, and electro-influenced) has always been a NIN influence. Maybe not homosexuality and One Direction, but all I'm saying is that as they grow older, they're going to want to try stuff with a happier mood. I don't think "Everything" is the best song I've ever heard in that vein, but it's a far better effort than The Fixer, imho, and it wasn't a stretch to expect NIN to write it, if they wanted to do a single shot of "happy" as part of an album. I don't think it'll represent Hesitation Marks.

That beat is really cool, for example, and totally NIN. Especially the DA-DA-DA-DA accents to end each fourth bar of the chorus. It's only really the verses that are cheesy, because the chorus is pretty post-punk.

Even in its cheesiness, I fucking love what's going on with the production. Even the multiple vocals in the second verse. And that lead guitar is totally The Cure. I think it would be pretty weird if everyone ended up hating an obviously enjoyable song. Trent sounds like he's having fun, that's what was missing from The Fixer.

I'll add, seeing as I agree, that one should read the NIN blurb in RS this week (if I find it online I'll edit) you can tell Trent is in a different humor as an individual; and also that NIN is essentially Trent, so no real need to split hairs there... Trent gets going, calls in musicians... Boom, band.

Also, we know there's a live version of "Disappointed" on Youtube, I'm assuming? I really like it. If you don't like distracting crowd noise, avoid. I think 'Came Back Haunted' is easily the weakest song of the bunch. The rest is making me excited for the album.
