Only the original is a good movie. The second is a poor copy. The third, fourth and fifth are really bad.

Can’t agree. The second is an entirely different premise. And it’s endlessly funnier.

The second is absolutely a beat-for-beat copy of the first, and I think it can be argued it undoes a lot of the point of the first. I still like it though.

The transformers series started off watchable and were made unwatchable by the first sequel and worse again from there.

I’m not sure you understand the premise of this thread. It’s not just “movies with bad sequels.”dimejinky99 wrote:The transformers series started off watchable and were made unwatchable by the first sequel and wise again from there.

The Bourne movies past the original trilogy really didn’t do them any favours either.

Well it’s a stupid idea. A sequel can’t ruin an original really. I’m talking more about multiple sequels that dragged the franchise /originals down so you don’t want to engage with them anymore. Cos they’re tainted. Taaaainted

I remember as a kid that Police Academy was a huge hit. Considered a quality movie. That franchise is absolute s*** now. Every single movie, helping to tear down what was good with the first.

They were hysterical when you’re a kid but I haven’t seen them since any of them.
Sometimes you know it’s not good to go back and just remember enjoying them rather than finding out they really don’t stand up. Comedies especially suffer from this. With a few notable exceptions.

I agree with that for some. Ovies, including 1-3 here. But 7 may be the worst movie ever made.dimejinky99 wrote:Anders wrote:I remember as a kid that Police Academy was a huge hit. Police Academy was a good solid rated R comedy. And it was "cool" to be able to see a rated R movie as a kid.Anders wrote:I remember as a kid that Police Academy was a huge hit. You know your franchise is shit when your mom can take your and your brother to Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol at the movie theater.

I agree that Matrix 2 and 3 dampen the enjoyment of the first one

Unbreakable: I like that Glass in Unbreakable came across as a tragic loser who desperately wanted something more out of the real world, and found it. He wasn't some brilliant mastermind. He was just a lunatic willing to kill a lot of people. Making him some super villain genius kinda hurts that.
I haven't seen Glass, but I hear that he is basically a superpowered evil genius. That undercuts the previous movie iMO.
but I'm probably not gonna see it anyway, so my image is untainted.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Wow. We see eye-to-eye on movie stuff.LoathedVermin72 wrote:So yeah sequels can’t ruin originals and all that, but I would say the thematic meaning of these movies was significantly negated/rewritten by their sequels/prequels...:

First Blood
Though I wouldn't say the following movies ruined it...more like cheapened it.

The Exorcist
Mentioning this mostly for II. III is actually quite good, but mostly unrelated to the original film.
