Nice but it's not how he played it in the studio. The ghost notes have been added for colour for this performance (or it is heavily gated which I doubt).

But this is a cool idea.
This is what I suspect. This video is performed better than the studio version is, but still not all that exciting and I've had drum teachers that sound more skilled than this.
You guys are nuts... I've been playing drums since I was 11 years old and that's some fantastic playing right there.

In general I feel like the anti-Matt Cameron sentiment has more to do with the decline in the band's songwriting during his tenure, rather than his bringing the band down. Granted I know you guys are also talking from drummers perspectives, but for my own taste I much prefer the attack that Cameron brings, rather than the latent timing of Jack.

I loved that video and was super excited when it first leaked. Then I realized they were just fucking off and Vedder didnt know most of the words :(

What a great song though. Made me dig into Carrols music and the original is just as good.

I do like the version with PJ and Jim on Vocals though!

Jack was indeed sloppy... a different issue than Matt's. But to point to Jack's different faults is not to say that Matt doesn't have any.

Also, I'm not just asking this to be a dick, but if you've played drums since you were 11... that makes you what age? I'm not arguing with credentials or anything, but I've played drums since I was 6, and as I said, it's quite easy for me to tell that Matt's drumming on that video is good (and professionally good) but as good as other professional drummers I've heard? Not by a long shot. And I've heard several amateur drummers who would have been embarrassed to release this performance as a promotional video. It might be good enough to please rhythmically-inclined PJ fans, and to be fair, that's all it needs to do. But it's certainly far from a drumming showcase.

it's a bit dick-ish to ask but yeah I'm 36... so that makes 25 years of drumming, having a kit in my house for most of those years, taking lessons, playing with school bands, and a working rock band. Would I be embarrassed to release that video? Not at all.

About the same time as me. It means nothing, of course, just that "MATT IS GREAT, YOU TRY TO PLAY BETTER THAN THAT" is a standard Pit response so I was just hoping for a more considered opinion, which I'm satisfied that you have. I went a bit far using the word 'embarrassed', but what would you say is particularly good about this drumming video? Does he do anything you couldn't do?

I'm not as good as Matt, it wouldn't be worth it.

To be fair, he was never going to do anything wildly more demanding than the studio version.

looks like they mixed different audio over the video. when he's playing on the ride bell during the intro, he hits a crash - like he does on the studio version - but we don't hear it. we hear another bell hit.

I never said it wasn't good only that it was different to the studio version. Matt is one hell of a drummer but that is not a great display of his abilities. If there was a video like this for MITS or even GSMF it would make more sense.

I saw Matt do a drummers workshop in 94? And it was jaw dropping. He is a really good top notch drummer. But again I will say that he is not the perfect fit for PJ (IMHO).

And if we're talking dick size I've been playing since I was 14 so 23 yrs. man we've all bashed our fair share. :D

Agreed.

I'll add that he's a really fantastic songwriter too (however I don't think Pearl Jam are the most complimentary outlet for his talents in that regard either).

Additionally, I would say that (from a drummers perspective), Jeff and Stone don't shine as much with Matt behind the kit (compared in a live environment with Dave A or with Jack).

I think that in general, the rhythm section was what most of this band was... plus Ed, obviously. The rhythm section being Dave, Jeff and Stone. Now that isn't quite as strong, or forceful, or doesn't drive the songs as much, your new 'focal points' are Ed and Mike (whether you like that or not). But in retrospect, how's that for democratic? I guess they've all had their day in the sun.

We're on the same page, Harmless. It is amazing, as you say. Also, Matt has been more precise and dare I say have more aggression since SG reformed. I believe his chops are better now and he is more match fit. But even that goes hand in hand with Jeff playing live more with RNDM.

Yep. So whatever you want to say about the side projects, they've been good news (and probably necessary) for the continuing enthusiasm and creativity of the rhythm section. Including Stone, come to think of it. Now he just needs to become more prominent in the mix.
