And we still won’t agree with it or pretend to understand it.

Their many attempts at crossover to attain relevance are always cringeworthy (the green day collaboration) but this one works and I could listen to it forever

Bump for Joe. You need to listen to Zooropa.Blaine Ryan wrote:Have you listened to their ‘90’s music much, dct? I often recommend that period to people who don’t usually like U2 — in a lot of ways I think those records are polar opposites to the traditional U2 aesthetic. It’s the only era of theirs I really like.durdencommatyler wrote:I also feel like I'm on team Harris regarding U2 in general. Like, I think they're cheesy and of a time and all of that. But I'm also not overly familiar with their whole body of work. But more than a "cheesy" sound (which is hard to define and a little silly) I think it's more of a lack of general authenticity.
Ultimately, I think it's why Backspacer and Lightning Bolt (though I enjoy them more than most here) aren't as good. It feels like Pearl Jam trying to sound like Pearl Jam. Or what they think the masses like about Pearl Jam, what will sound good at a stadium full of people. U2 sounds like that to me. Like a band trying to sound like the biggest band in the world and acting like it's still true even if it never was (which, obviously... it was true at one point, but whether or not it was true is irrelevant to them; they'd sound like they were regardless).

I'm considering listening to their post-Achtung stuff while I listen to the pod.

Achtung Baby is very good but not an album I'd offer to counter the argument that they were inauthentic. The whole concept behind that album is grounded in irony

Yeah, that's fair. I don't know how ironic the album is but I get what you mean. I just think the songs are solid for the most part. But again we're talking about a band that I don't think is all that great to begin with. It's my second favorite U2 record but that's kind of meaningless. I haven't listened to that record in a decade or more.theplatypus wrote:Achtung Baby is very good but not an album I'd offer to counter the argument that they were inauthentic. True. I just meant, if U2 isn't generally your thing, those records are different enough (and good enough) that they're worth trying.theplatypus wrote:Achtung Baby is very good but not an album I'd offer to counter the argument that they were inauthentic. Even Better Than The Real Thing and Acrobat are my two favorite songs on Achtung Baby.

One of my best friends in the world used to give me so much shit for liking those two songs. Especially EBTTRT. She thought it was absurd that it was my favorite song.

Zoo tv tour definitely. Achtung I wouldn’t think so apart from the fly and real thing

Tbh if they’re you’re favourites you might well like zooropa a lot more than AB.
The two albums sit so well together though.

That’s like the only part of the first episode that I genuinely hated, and hearing it confirmed my worst fears about the cheesiness of that podcast.
But then it came up again later in the episode and I laughed a little.
Now you guys are typing it out and...fuck it, I’m in.

Back in July I made a pilgrimage to Hansa studios in Berlin where AB was recorded.
It was in very old East Germany. Really cool though.
